Despite their loss last night to the woefully horrible Chicago White Sox, the Tigers still seem to be sitting atop the MLB. In fact, I just saw an article this morning about how the Detroit Tigers have flipped the script and taken the top spot from the defending champion Dodgers despite their three game lead in the win category.
It's actually kind of funny because in Michigan we have gotten so used to hearing people talk about how horrible the Tigers are. Sure, we had some good runs here and there in the past couple of decades, but for the most part the break down in our bull pen and a few other spots has been looming large over us.
Then last season happened, or should I say the end of last season happened, and the Tigers made a run at the playoffs. It actually was a bit of an anti-climactic end, but it gave people a lot of hope for this season.
Oddly enough, I don't really hear many people talking about the Tigers like you might expect. Perhaps everyone is a bit nervous and they don't want to jinx it. I honestly don't know. I stopped watching the Tigers a couple of years ago, not because I wanted to, but because YouTube TV couldn't come to an agreement with the local Fox Sports affiliates. That means Pistons, Tigers, and Red Wings games that were broadcast solely on Fox Sports Detroit became unavailable to us.
Unfortunately, due to black out restrictions, even if the games were broadcast on the major networks, the blackout rules would apply and we still wouldn't be able to see them. You really have no idea how frustrating it is to go through your YouTube TV live guide and see a Tigers game only to flip to it and be met with the cursed black screen and white words telling you the game is blacked out in your area.
Due to that fact, I haven't really been following them this season. As I said though, you don't hear people talking about them too much either though. I guess maybe if I watched ESPN a bit more I might hear something, but the chatter around the water cooler seems to be pretty minimal.
As I said, I think everyone is just being a little cautious.
Despite that, the Tigers continue to roll along. They have 62 games under their belt now and although they are the number one team in major league baseball, they still aren't being given the best odds to win the World Series right now.
In fact, they aren't even considered the second most likely team to win it all. The first spot goes to the LA Dodgers who won the series last year, and the second place spot falls to the NY Yankees. Then in third place we have the Detroit Tigers.
Let's hope they prove everyone wrong!
