Timestamp blog of my uncle's maize farm

Having the opportunity to watch a farm throughout the season is a unique experience as a lot changes throughout the season. This year, I decided to focus on my uncle’s maize field which I believe has a typical story that can be told through just three pictures. Anyone familiar with farm stuff might see this as totally boring or basic because you probably already know more details than I do.

First, at the start of the season, there is dark soil with little green shoots just peeking out. Their little leaves are bright and you can see potential, infact you're seeing harvest day in your mind already, and there's hope that you'll get big pay day when you harvest and sell, that is if shit don't go down with climate and how it can ruin crops.

It is pretty easy to feel the optimism of the farmer and I did see that on my uncle's face at that time. At that time, the little plants are just beginning their journey and the soil has a lot to offer.

Over the next few weeks the crops grow and the dark soil is replaced by tall green plants. eventually, the ground is lined with rows of heavy, full cobs that are ready to be harvested. You can really start to see how the farmers patience pays off.

Finally, at the end of the season, the field is very different. The plants are all tall and brown as the summer crops are harvested. I would say the field and soil would take a break and rest at this point. There is a lot to be seen when the land stops to take a break before it begins a new cycle or growth and harvest.

But I had to ask my uncle, what the best time for maize harvesting is. He said that maize harvesting is best when the kernels are fully developed and moisture content is around 30 percent. This would usually happen in about 70 to 90 days after planting the seeds and that depends on the variety and local climate conditions.

The good farmer as my uncle said is the person that will commit to properly monitor the crop's maturity and moisture levels for the best timing.
