The Grossmünster is located in the old town of Zurich and has a fascinating history. It was a Catholic parish church until the beginning of the time of the reformation. With its characteristic and striking twin towers, it is one of the city's landmarks. Originally it was simply called Zurich Church. The name Grossmünster was first mentioned in around 1322.
One of the towers features a statue of Charlemagne and can be easily for 5 CHF. climbed to the top via a staircase with about 187 steps in the nave. Once at the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the old town and the nearby lakes and Alps from the viewing platform if the weather is beautiful.
Both the Zurich government and Ulrich Zwingli were opposed to the mercenary system, that is why Zwingli was called to the Grossmünster as a lieutenant priest from 1519.
Thanks for your visit, have a great day!
