The Passion of the Christ

In 2004, the drama film The Passion of the Christ was released in cinemas, directed by Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci.

The film focuses on the last 12 hours of Christ’s life. It begins with the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and ends with the Resurrection. However, the main part of the film focuses on the torture and crucifixion.

Some claimed the film subtly promoted antisemitism, while certain theologians argued that the script distorted events and contained inaccuracies.

That said, judging it strictly as a film, I found it impressive—an exceptional depiction, although quite violent and intense to the point that it made me tear up. I thought Caviezel’s performance as Jesus Christ was outstanding, as was the music direction. I also appreciated the decision not to go for the easy choice of English as the main language—instead, Latin and Hebrew were used. Overall, the performances were strong across the board, and I was pleasantly surprised by Mel Gibson’s directing.

Despite its violence, I believe this is a film worth watching. Yes, it's controversial due to its extreme portrayal of the Passion, but there's a truth to it that personally touched me. The silence of Jesus, the scenes with His mother, the slow unfolding of events—all create a result that feels almost liturgical.

Borderline

A dangerous and persistent stalker breaks into the luxurious home of a pop star, consumed by grandiose wedding fantasies. With her life in danger, Sophia must escape before he traps her in his delusional dream. What a ridiculous film—I honestly wonder how movies like this get approved for release to the public.

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Samara Weaving is just okay, without much space to really do anything.

  • Ray Nicholson also tries to bring a creepy energy.

  • Interesting concept on paper, but poorly executed.

  • It has some moments that build atmosphere with a new noir style, especially in the first half.

  • The score isn’t bad.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • I generally don’t like the mix of comedy and horror, especially when it’s not done well.

  • It has pacing issues.

  • I’d describe the script as weak, even clumsy.

  • A strong sarcastic tone throughout, which mostly doesn’t work.

  • The tension never builds properly or in a satisfying way.

  • Some performances are poor, and the characters feel flat and mechanical.

  • You’re obviously not going to get scared.

  • There are some illogical and unrealistic elements (no spoilers).

I watched it decades go, shortly after the release and enjoyed it. Lots of violence as I remember, that's all that sticks.

For some reason when there is violence it always sticks to mind.

I watched passion of Christ as a teenager, and it's hard to see Caviezel as Jesus especially in some his lastest films. It was violent really, and they tried all they can with the details they got from the Bible.
Although some of the the extra creativity they added might not have been biblical

Yes at the end of the day it is entertainment and the add thinks to make it so!

I have watched "The Passion of the Christ" so many times every Easter. It's a good movie that helps me remember Christ during this time.
I think Samara Weaving is a great actress.. I really enjoyed her films, especially "Ready or Not," which is my favorite, along with "The Babysitter," parts 1 and 2. She portrayed the role very well. And I will watch out for this one.

My go to movie for Easter is Jesus of Nazareth
