Happy Tuesday Hivers!
My brother and sister-in-law both love planting. When you visit their place, you’ll see plenty of plants around, not flowers or ornamentals, but vegetables and fruit trees.
Their yard isn’t big—actually, it’s quite small, but they’ve made good use of it for planting. Growing your own vegetables can really help lower daily expenses since you don’t need to buy them from the market; you can just pick what you need straight from the garden. Plus, everything is organic since you don’t use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
Since they also enjoy eating vegetables and fruits, that’s what they choose to grow. Flowers are often planted to beautify the surroundings, but if you’re practical, vegetables and fruits are much more useful, you can actually eat them, unlike flowers.
One time, they bought a ripe papaya, one of their favorite fruits to eat, and instead of throwing the seeds in the trash, they simply discarded them in their yard. They didn’t do anything else, and look at it now: three papaya trees have grown in their small yard!
Actually, behind the papaya, they also planted bitter melon (ampalaya), but it isn’t very healthy. Although it has started to bear fruit, the fruits are small and often die off quickly.

They also grow sweet potatoes, or “kamote” as we call it. You can tell how healthy the plant is just by looking at the sweet potato tops, they’re always so vibrant and full of life. It’s one of my sister-in-law’s favorites, she simply steams them, adds some calamansi and tomatoes, and that’s the dish.

Actually, I suggested to my sister-in-law that it would be better to plant peanuts in a sack. She didn’t expect them to grow at all, she just gave it a try. But to her surprise, they sprouted! Worried that moving them might harm the plants, she decided to just leave them on the pot.
They also planted spinach and lemongrass on the same pot. Maybe they need to transfer the other 2 plants so they can grow quickly. They are still very young so they can't harvest them yet.

Can you figure out what plant this is? Maybe if you’re into gardening, it would be easy, but if not, I won’t make you guess. This is ube, or purple yam. There are many ways you can use it as an ingredient, but in our family, we usually either add it to our vegetable dishes or make ube halaya.
It’s really great to grow your own plants because when you plant something, you’ll always have a harvest to enjoy.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
