Wednesday Walk and My Garden Update

A month and three weeks ago, I showed my backyard vegetable garden.

It is just a very small area.

I planted some strawberries. Do you think I provided adequate space for sprawling? I thought I did, but it doesn't look like it. LOL!

I do not know if it will help, but I placed some netting over the strawberries. It is supposed to prevent the birds or other animals from eating the fruits.

I had leftover strawberries, so I placed them in a pot. No netting on that one, LOL!

It wasn't visible a month and a half ago, but the corn has grown.

Corn is wind-pollinated. They said that it is best to plant them in blocks rather than in a single row, This is to ensure a good transfer of pollen to the silks.

That is what I did. It seems healthy!

And to the left of the corn are three little plants of peppers. Do you see it?

I have two leeks... just to try. I know, I should cover the ground with hay.

And yes, tomatoes.

As you can see, I have rock-hard clay and sand that lack nutrients. The ideal soil for a vegetable garden is loose, loamy soil. I can supplement the soil with organic matter to provide the ideal growing environment. But right now... I just want to plant!

Like I said, it is a small area. It is surprising what you can plant in a small area!It definitely is an improvement from last year!

If in case you are wondering what that plant is in the very front... it is called Society Garlic or Tulbaghia Violacea.

The blossoms have a pleasant scent, but when the leaves or rhizomes are crushed, they smell strongly of garlic. Leaves and flowers can be used to salads and soups since they are both edible.

And strawberries do tend to sprawl.
I had to start with a fresh crop of strawberries as my potted ones were stunted from lack of fertilization depleted the potting soil. Gardening neglect on my part, too many other priorities over the last three years, but not this year.

I'm making up for lost ground. Especially good quality time with my sons, making a real decent meal without resorting to prepared and convenience foods. The yard looks like a disaster at this time but making progress, some things around the house need fixing or replacing, we need some serious uncluttering to do, letters to write, my RRSP needs to be reviewed and tweaked. And of course all those medical appointments.
I might not be able to return to work.
My benefits won't exactly replace my normal income but I can get by.

I say, that if you can make do with what you are making now, go for it! There is nothing like retiring early. Me, I have a long ways to go... but I enjoy it, and lots of vacation time every year to have fun! But can you do side hustles? And having to care for your Mom, you may not have time to. Take it easy, sis! Go on a vacation! I have not heard you go on a vacation yet. Now is the time!

I am hosting an Afternoon Tea party (for 8, plus me, nine) in Church today. There are 19 tables! I try to take photos. I wonder who are seated at my table— probably some old ladies, hehehe. It will be fun!!

Sometimes, a small garden is really best as it's easier to maintain from all aspects. You can really get a lot in a small space too! Your garden looks lovely; it's been too cool here for much growth beyond the onions and the garlic, so I'm still waiting to see whether or not I'm going to actually have much of a garden.

When I see land that is not gardened, it feels like it wants to be planted with something, !LOL. After leaving my first-ever home, I said I wouldn't do gardens anymore. Then I started planting in pots. Then I went inside the house. The last two years saw me planting it on the ground. Geez... luckily, I only have a tiny piece of open land. Do you remember my pool? I donated that. In its place, I gardened!!!

Very nice garden! I love strawberries but don't have any in my yard. I usually buy them off the stands here on the side of the road. You should have a great crop this year!
