In our farm, surrounded by cool mountains air, our family finds joy in growing vegetables. Among all the crops we plant chayote (sayote) has always been one of our favorites. This vegetable is easy to grow and give us a sense of pride every harvest season. What makes it even more special is that we don’t need to buy seed, we simply plant the fruit itself, and in no time, new vines climb up and start bearing fresh healthy fruits.
Because of our cold climate, we don’t need to sue nay pesticides. Everything grows naturally, making our chayote organic and safe to eat. I feel so proud whenever I look at our garden and see the vines full of light green fruits swaying gently with the wind. It reminds me of how patience and care always pay off in the end.
Just yesterday, we harvested a good amount of chayote fruits and elaves. The fruits are always the star in our kitchen, my family loves how versatile they are, so we cook the in many different ways, ginisang Sayote with Shrimp or Pork. Tinola, Sayote with egg, Vegetable Lumpia and even Sayote soup during cold evenings Aside from being delicious. I also love the sayote is full of nutrients. It’s rich in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants and its good for digestion and heart problem. It’s a vegetables that truly nourishes both body and soul.
One
of my personal favorites is the salad made from young chayote leaves. When freshly picked the leaves have a mild sweetness that blends perfectly with onions, tomatoes and a bit of vinegar or calamansi. Every bite tastes like freshness straight from the garden.
Our chayote plants are not just food – they’re a blessing! These days. When prices are high our harvest help support the family. Each chayote sells about 10 pesos and one sack can earn us around 1,000.00 pesos. It might not seem much to others, but for us, it’s a big help in covering our daily needs. What makes it even better is that buyers often contact us even before harvest, especially hospitals and local markets that trust our organic produce.

May be one day you will also find joy in planting your own organic chayote, just like we do- a simple plant that brings health, happiness and hope to our future. 💚
