The Thursday evening plans
Yesterday we were planning on picking up a package for our daughter as I bought her a Monopoly game, special grocery edition which apparently needed 30+ other cards to be played properly. I missed that memo when I bought it so instead of buying sets of 2 euros per pack with the hope of finding the right cards, I went online to find someone offering all these cards, as they used to be handed out for free buying groceries so I knew plenty of people would have doubles.. I found one selling them for 5 euros total, boom, that's a good deal! These were delivered ad a pick up point so our plan was to pick these up and then drive to the city to get a few items my boyfriend needs for his wardrobe.
Of we went...
To my surprise, nobody made a fuzz about going, usually there's at least one out of three who doesn't feel like going there but this time it was different. Coats on (thankfully, as I often just put on a vest only) and off we went. I usually check to ask if my boyfriend has the keys and check my purse for mine, you probably know what's coming.. This time I didn't ask (djeez!) and I pulled the door, boom, closed. Then I saw my boyfriend searching his pockets looking for the car keys (those include the keys of the house, btw) and he said he forgot them. I started feeling unease because at the same time I didn't feel mine either and they are hard to miss because of the keychain. F*ck!
What now?
I was a bit stressed, I admit, but I tried to calm myself and remind myself that we had been through much worse and this too will be solved, lol. I didn't know how because our landlady lives in the city, yes the city to which we were planning on driving to. About a 20 minute drive and I knew she was probably working because she told me she has morning and evening shifts, such as many other people here in Spain. Ok, let's not panic and think.
Aunt and uncle
Her aunt and uncle live right next door to us, they are super kind people and my first thought was, they could have a key for these situations. Our other neighbour in front of us asked us what the issue was as she saw us standing in front of the door when she came home as well as when she left. I explained the issue and she said maybe the other neighbours have the key, by the time she gave me his number, we had an answer from our landlady that they don't have a key so there was no point in calling them anyway.
She was trying to think with me and said maybe we can contact the president of the building to see if they have a spare key or maybe know who to call to solve it. She was super helpful and I really appreciated her stepping up to help us as I think I only saw her once or twice until then, so we only greeted each other.
Calling a locksmith
I talked with our daughter's tutor to ask if she knew any locksmith, she didn't but she told me what to type in google and I found one open 24/7 not far from here so that was my best luck probably. She was just calling him to ask for help while my boyfriend let me know our landlady sent a family member and he'd be here in 20 minutes. Oh my gosh, the moment that she sent that, I felt so lucky haha.
I mean, I don't know how they handle this here but I think a locksmith could have been expensive and this is really not the month for these extra costs, lol. I mean, this is never fun but right now it would have sucked even more. I felt so grateful that a family member was willing to drive from the city to open the door for us.
Our hero!
After some waiting in the hall downstairs, we finally saw a man trying all keys at the gate, we knew this was probably our hero as he clearly wasn't familiar with the set of keys. A very friendly guy walked in, absolutely not bothered for having to drive here after I apologized several times and said I'm a dumbass and it's my fault for not checking my purse.. He said don't worry, it's not an issue it happens to everyone at least once in their lives and it's all good. At least you can go in now.
I had 10 euros in my wallet so I wanted him to have it for fuel but he didn't want to take it. He said absolutely not, give it to the little one. And so our little one's savings grew by 10 euros yesterday evening because this man didn't accept the money. I felt even more grateful when we met him because it was clear that he was genuinely not bothered to help us while he never met us before. Clearly our landlady has a very nice family.
A few good laughs later
It was time to dive to the package point to pick up the reason we wanted to leave in the first place. Sadly they closed early and when arriving there, I realized I didn't bring my ID so it could have been an issue picking it up anyway. It was already half past eight at that time so we didn't think driving to the city was a great idea, on the other hand, at least then all the trouble was not for nothing so we hopped back in the car to see if we could score a few needed items.
I don't like to wait until the sale is over and then realize I could have bought the needed things for half the price lol. We found a new jeans for my boyfriend and a warmer pyjama, which was needed for a while now and then hopped in the car back home.
Moments of gratitude
It's in these moments that I realize all too well how important it is to have a nice landlord and neighbours. Remember last week when another neighbour saved me from having an empty car battery by telling me I left the lights on? Well, he could have thought it's not my problem so whatever. He didn't, and I will remember this. If he ever needs help, I will be there for him too.
After many bad experiences with a lot of people in general, it's extra nice to have these experiences because I appreciate the good deeds even more as I don't expect people to help by default. I would first expect them to not care and be thankful if one does and steps up to help. Lately, we seem to encounter more of these good people who are still sort of strangers to us which really lifts my mood.
