Accusing or blaming anyone for an offence should be subject to proper scrutiny to ascertain that the offender is guilty as accused. Punishing someone for an offence he didn't plan beforehand without thorough investigation is sheer wickedness.
I still can't get over a horrible scene that occured around my community few days ago.
I woke up to a feminine voice shouting olè! olè! That is thief. I didn't take it seriously as the occurrence of theft is not unusual seeing the community is still being developed. There are houses that are partially completed but has residents already. Don't be surprised, it's Nigeria. Some beings use that as opportunity to burgle and cart away properties. So I went about my activities.
However, in the afternoon, I heard a male voice pleasing for help, he was shouting out in pains. My curiosity made me follow the voice and alas! I saw a man tied to an electric pole right under the scorching sun. My heart dropped 😢. He pleaded to be killed rather than the suffering but the plea fell on dead hears.
This man was tied to the pole from the early hours of the morning till the setting of the sun. I was moved but what could I do? Later in the evening, I saw a man with a blood stained jaw, his hands were swollen as a result of the tying and he was shaky. He could hardly fold his fingers. He asked to know where he could get water. I moved closer and asked him what happened while he was supplied with what he needed. He was totally exhausted but managed to speak. He narrated that he was new to the community and he is a carpenter who was invited to help with the roofing of a particular house. So in his search for the house, he appeared in the yard of somebody and immediately, he was pointed as a thief.
Moreover, I asked what was he accused of stealing, he said a local hen 😲😳. Local hen, how is that possible?
- In Africa I don't know about other places, our local fowls are very smart, a man cannot catch one. It'll take a group of 3 or 4 people to catch one.
- This man came in the morning, no sane person comes to a yard to steal in the morning
- When this man was caught, he had no fowl in his hands so no evidence.
- He mentioned where he was going yet no one deemed it fit to check if he was truly headed there.
He was advocated for by someone he knows in the community. This same person gave him the transport to go back home.
Apparently, he was unjustly punished. He was crying as he was leaving but the tears didn't flow.
I wonder how he's doing now 😔.
I see it as a transfer of aggression. The inflation is causing frustration but should we transfer it to a fellow who is also affected? Is he the dollar that's rising against the naira?
I was close to tears but I swallowed it. I can't help but voice it out somewhere. I'm pained. This is sheer wickedness.
May the unjustly accused be vindicated.
