Carrie Ann Moss’ words really struck me. She is absolutely correct.
They teach you how to see the world, your parents, teachers, TV shows, religion. It’s like they give you a pair of glasses and say “Here; see the world like this.”
But then one day if you’re lucky, something hits you harder than that ever did: You can take off those glasses.
You can see the world through your own eyes! It’s realizing that you were asleep for so long. All of a sudden it feels as though everything has changed and now YOU are in control.
For the longest time, I believed that life was about following rules.
Do what your parents tell you, think like your teachers want you to think, believe what your religion says is right, etcetera. It always seemed like someone else was writing my story; I just had to act out their script
But then something changed. It could have been a moment, or it may have simply been growing up a little.
The point is that I realized I could set my own rules. I was able to create my own life.
However, it’s not always smooth sailing. When you start thinking for yourself, you must be prepared to challenge things.
You have to be able to ask: “Wait a minute, why do I believe this?” It can be terrifying because that means stepping into unknown territory. But it’s also incredibly thrilling.
Designing your own life involves finding out what you truly desire. Not what your parents want for you, or your teachers, or anyone else in the world but yourself – what do you want?
This is a tough question and there isn’t always an easy answer to it. But that’s the exciting part! You get to search. You get to experiment with different things. You get to make mistakes and then learn from them too.
For me, creating my own life is about pursuing what interests me. It involves doing things that I enjoy even if they do not fit neatly into someone else’s categories.
It means surrounding myself with people who are behind me and lifting me up rather than dragging me down. Being truthful to myself even when it is hard.
And you know what?
I would say it’s totally worth it. Every single bit of the effort pays off in the end because in your designed life, you don’t just go through motions, you live. Like really live!
So here is a toast to removing the glasses, questioning the rules and designing one’s own life. It may not be easy but it is definitely worth it trust me on this one.
