The world which was hitherto in darkness, saw a light and that light came via social media. The whole world wanted more than just audio communications through phone calls and fax machines.
Social media came to the rescue as an avenue where people could chat and even send pictures around the world to each other without hassles and also a means to video chat loved ones who are scattered across the globe.
I remember many years ago how it would take over thirty days to receive a letter from loved ones abroad. Parents were always anxious to kmow what is happening with their kids, wives were not left out as they eagerly awaited news from their husbands abroad. All these has been put to a stop by the intervention of social media.
Who would have thought that I could communicate with anyone in the world from the comfort of my room without breaking a sweat or needing a visa. That's the beauty of social media.
The effects and influence of social media varies, it's a two way street. For some persons, social media has been rewarding while for others it is the devil's pitch fork with which he uses to oppress.
Rewards of social media
Personally, I stand more with the benefits of social media because they are numerous. Some of which I will be listing below as follows...
Bridging the gap between local and international countries.
Creating easy flow of communication between diverse persons all over the globe. Making access to information easier.
Creation of advanced market and audience space for e-marketing.
Creation of passive income streams without the confines of a walled office.
Building better and stronger bonds which in turn leads to lasting relationships.
Broadening the scope of the educational sector. Granting easy access to students for better learning experience.
Bridging the gap between producers and consumers, no matter where they are in the world.
Enhancing the medical sector by making easy accessibility to medical experts and prompt response.....etc
This is just to mention a few.
Demerits of social media
I will sum it up in one word and that word is indiscipline. A wise man once said that...

The creators of the different social media handles, from 2go to BBM to Facebook, instagram Twitter, WhatsApp, Snapchat and the rest, all these social media apps were created for communication purposes.
It's sad and disheartening to see now, how social media has been abused by the younger generation. They use the diverse apps for selfish purposes, not minding whether it hurts or detroys others. Things like fraud popularly referred to as yahoo yahoo is prevalent in so many countries today.
What about the fact that social media has made students so lazy, majority of them no longer study diligently rather they while away their time frolicking on social media.
I could go on and on but I still stand with the fact that social media has a positive influence on those who know its purpose and use it as such.
