In the game battle splinterlands where stats and ability are important for line-up strategy, some cards dominate the meta with their power and popularity, while others remain overlooked and underused. These forgotten cards may not always be the first choice in battle, but with the right strategy, they can become valuable assets, catching opponents off guard and turning the tide of a match.
One such underrated card is Venari Heatsmith—a card that may not seem powerful at first glance but holds untapped potential in the right strategy. This is what I think is not commonly used in the battle where I play most in Modern Format experience.
I'll be sharing some ideas and a strategy guide for this card, and answer the following questions from splinterlands post Challenge Theme: Battle of the Forgotten Cards!, Which card do you think is underrated?, How do you use it effectively in battle?, Have you surprised an opponent with an unexpected strategy?

Why Venari Heatsmith?
Venari Heatsmith is a low-cost Fire non-attacker unit with Shield and abilities which has Void Armor, Amplify, and Thorns, a perfect use on certain rule sets given. While many players focus on high-damage or speedy monsters, Heatsmith offers stability and durability, making it a solid frontline choice in certain rulesets or support since it has Amplify and Thorns.

How to Use Venari Heatsmith Effectively
Venari Heatsmith may not be a go-to choice for many players, but with the right strategy, it can be a valuable asset in battle. In low-mana battles, its Shield ability allows it to absorb more damage, making it a surprisingly durable tank. It also thrives in Reverse Speed rulesets, where its naturally low speed turns into an advantage, letting it strike before faster enemies. Against magic-heavy opponents, Heatsmith can be paired with summoners like Tarsa for extra health or with monsters that reduce enemy magic damage, helping mitigate one of its biggest weaknesses. Additionally, combining it with Thorns and Amplify makes it an excellent counter to melee attackers, punishing them with extra damage upon retaliation. With these strategies, Venari Heatsmith can turn from an overlooked card into a sneaky powerhouse in the right battles.

Since this card is a non-attacker it can be an excellent combo for Weapons Training in the Fire element, providing both durability and offensive support. Since Heatsmith is a non-attacking unit, pairing it with a monster that has Weapons Training grants it an attack, allowing it to contribute offensively while still maintaining its role as a defensive tank.

Have you surprised an opponent with an unexpected strategy?
Players may think this card is very rarely used in the battle it has better cards useful than Venari Heatsmith on certain rule set strategy and Many opponents underestimate Heatsmith, expecting it to fall quickly. However, when properly positioned, it can merge up damage, allowing your backline attackers to deal devastating blows. Whether in low-mana/high-mana battles, rulesets favoring the defense, or unexpected synergies, Heatsmith proves that even forgotten cards can turn the tide of battle. Even myself didn't know what to do with this card until I saw potential with the given rule set that can be useful for this card.

In this battle, I utilized Ferexian Hero to make the most of its Weapons Training ability, granting melee attack stats to both Krash Wanderford and Venari Heatsmith. This strategy was particularly I think effective given the Tis but Scratches, Super Sneak, and Blood & Sunder rulesets. Additionally, after reviewing my opponent’s history, I noticed they didn’t have the Eternal Tofu summoner—had they used it, my melee-heavy lineup would have been at a disadvantage. I chose Helios Matriarch as my summoner and deployed Chaos Dragon, Krash Wanderford, Ferexian Hero, Venari Heatsmith, Firecaller, and Dumacke Orc to execute my plan.
My opponent took a similar melee-focused strategy, with the strategy centered around Katrelba Gobson. They also selected Helios Matriarch and deployed Mycelic Slipspawn, Queen Mycelia, Katrelba Gobson, Venari Scout, Vampire Bat, and Venari Knifer. However, their lineup was vulnerable to my setup placing Dumacke Orc in the backline is a pretty important role, as it effectively countered their Sneak attackers, ensuring Katrelba Gobson was eliminated early in the match.
Venari Heatsmith and some of my units deployed to fully utilize this strategy played an important role in my victory, demonstrating the effectiveness of Weapons Training, Thorns, Amplify, and strategic positioning. Had my opponent used overpowered cards or a Sneak attacker with Shatter, my plan might not have worked as well. What do you think is an underrated card? Drop your thoughts in the comments! 😁
