Previously, the Challenge System in Splinterlands functioned as a few options-only and open league-style customizable, allowing players from Novice to Champion levels in both Modern and Wild formats to compete freely. It was often used for events or live competitions, where players could publicly share their battles to showcase their skills or practice newbies.
Now, the system has improved with the addition of customizable options and designated rule sets, providing a more dynamic and personalized gameplay experience. In this blog, we’ll explore these updated challenge systems and how to utilize them effectively. The following structure of the content blog will be categories based on the Challenge given Splinterlands community: Aspects of Custom Challenges That Can Be Customized, How to Challenge Other Players, and Fun & Creative Rulesets to Try in Your Custom Challenges
Aspects of Custom Challenges That Can Be Customized
1. Mana Cap
- Adjust the maximum mana players can use to build their teams, ranging from low-cost skirmishes to high-mana epic showdowns.
2. Rulesets

3. Elements (Splinters)
- Enable or disable certain elements (e.g., Fire, Life, Death) to focus on specific strategies or limit options for added challenge.
4. Summoner Cap and Card restrictions
- Require players to use certain set cards only for an extra layer of rarity and exclusivity, depending on the summoner cap level will also follow the level of all cards used in the battle from novice to expert level.

Interesting Rulesets to Try in Your Custom Challenges
The "Tiny but Terrible" Challenge
Mana Cap: 40
Ruleset: Little League and Noxious Fumes.
Splinters: Water and Death are Inactive.
Strategy: Focus on small but effective monsters with synergy to survive Poisons.
This challenge can be tricky and fun since poison in a low mana cap can be challenging as the strategy would likely be the battle of endurance and learning to counter poison.
The Gladiator Arena
Mana Cap: 50
Ruleset: Bloodlust is enabled for all monsters, mimicking Gladius cards.
Splinters: No restrictions.
Strategy: Build an aggressive team that snowballs into power.
It's quite rare to use Gladiator cards on most as it needs to meet its requirements to get even stronger. Now that this adds to this challenge system we will learn some strategies to use them even on certain levels of your gladius cards in different leagues.
The Elemental Ban
Mana Cap: Random.
Ruleset: Disable 3 splinters (e.g., no Water, Earth, or Fire).
Strategy: Forces creative use of remaining splinters.
I do commonly use any elements as long as I have those units on that splinter color but with this we can practice and learn them with your other player.
Chaos Unlimited
Mana Cap: 999+
Ruleset: Reverse Speed, Explosive Weaponry (Blast damage), and Healed Out.
Strategy: Expect chaotic, high-damage battles where survival is key.
High damage would be ideal for this strategy but also depends on the abilities of the units being deployed. Deploy your favorite overpower cards to battle with no restriction of mana cap.
Suggestion of New Challenge system
Like a chess game, the timer ensures a fast-paced game, rewarding players who can analyze and adapt swiftly. Similarly, in Splinterlands, a time limit for team selection challenges players to balance speed and strategy, testing their ability to create effective lineups without overthinking, or maybe fast enough to deploy in less than a minute because they already have a strategy in mind. This feature adds excitement and urgency, catering to those who thrive in high-stakes, time-sensitive scenarios while encouraging mastery of the game's mechanics.
Time Settings
- Adjust the timer for team selection, catering to quick decision-makers or those who enjoy meticulous planning.
I rarely see players using the challenge system, except during live streams of competitive matches where battle links are shared after both players agree on who will create and send the challenge. I also believe this system serves as a valuable practice system for newcomers to Splinterlands, helping them learn strategies and exchange ideas with others.
I hope this exploration of the new challenge system inspires you to experiment and discover creative ways to make the most of it!
