I've always talked about the importance of personal and professional development; and today I'm here to show you how consistent I am with what I preach and to present my example.
I'm 39 years old. I have a degree in accounting and finance. I'm fluent in English, my native Spanish, of course. I have a second level of Japanese and a little Russian. Enough to communicate.
In addition, I'm a writer, have published several books, and I teach workshops and lectures on literature and narrative techniques. I've been a professor of Cuban history at the Las Tunas Art School since last year.
However, this didn't seem enough. So I enrolled in the Spanish Literature program at the University of Las Tunas.
Today I'm here to show you the University of Las Tunas, while I explain a little about why I decided to continue my professional development at this age, taking into account everything I've explained above.
Since I was a child, there have always been two professions that caught my attention, and in fact, they have always seemed to me to be the most important professions in the world.
I'm referring to teaching and medicine.
Without a doubt, as the image shows, teachers have a great responsibility to consolidate education and instruction. What do I mean by this? Well, if teachers had no other profession. But just as a teacher can educate a student, they can also distort them.
And I learned that firsthand during this first year as a history teacher at the art school.
I have encountered students who have a very poor academic foundation and some deficiencies in their formal education. However, I have taken the time to identify these deficiencies and to educate and instruct them, not only so that they pass the year but also so that what they learn will serve them for life.
That's why I have always tried to lead by example. I can't ask them to do something I wouldn't do or wouldn't be capable of doing. Therefore, if I demand that they study, not only their degree but also educate themselves in every aspect of art and life they can so they can continue their studies in preparation for college, I have to do it too.
So, at the first opportunity, I enrolled in the Spanish Literature program.
You'd think that, being a history teacher (a subject I've discovered I love), that would be the program to enroll in. However, no.
And the reason is that what I love most in the world is writing, and whoever says writing also says reading.
If I've loved teaching history classes, it's because I can combine and connect it with literature and art in general.
Art has always been intrinsically linked to historical movements. That's why it's been so easy and at the same time beautiful for me to study and teach Cuban history. I've also learned so much about my history and my culture.
So imagine what I could teach, the classes I could prepare if I put this same impetus into Spanish literature. My goal is to help students love their language, to read, to learn about the main universal and Cuban authors; to foster the development and habit of reading.
A habit so necessary, yet so lacking in recent years.
But the main beneficiary of enrolling in this beautiful university, which you can see in these photographs, is undoubtedly me.
Now I'm actually going to learn how to teach a class. So far, I've done well, according to what my supervisors have told me, and my students' learning is reflected in their exam grades and their class participation.
While I study, I will continue working at the art school and will continue teaching Cuban History. However, as the course progresses, I will learn more and give better classes.
Something positive and something that also makes me happy about my teaching experience is that I've been able to contribute my part to the growth of my students, both as a music professional and as human beings.
Their actions speak for themselves.
I'm very proud of them. And, of course, I'm also proud of having taken this important step toward self-improvement.
I believe that if I become a better teacher, my students will be better people.

Hola, amigos.
Siempre he hablado de la importancia de la superación personal y profesional; y hoy vengo a mostrarles cómo soy consecuente con lo que predico y le presento mi ejemplo.
Tengo 39 años. Soy graduado de contabilidad y finanzas. Hablo con fluidez en inglés, mi idioma español, por supuesto, tengo segundo nivel en japonés y un hablo un poco de ruso. Lo suficiente para comunicarme.
Además de eso, soy escritor, tengo varios libros publicados e imparto talleres y conferencias sobre literatura y técnicas narrativas. Soy profesor de historia de Cuba en la escuela de arte de Las Tunas desde el año pasado.
Sin embargo, esto no me parece suficiente. De modo que matriculé en la carrera de español literatura en la universidad de Las Tunas.
Hoy vengo a mostrarles La Universidad de Las Tunas, a medida en que les explico un poco por qué tomé la decisión de continuar mi superación profesional a esta edad y con todo lo que les expuse anteriormente.
Desde niño siempre hubo dos carreras oficios que me llamaron la atención y que de hecho siempre me han parecido de las carreras u oficios más importantes que existen en el mundo.
Me refiero a el magisterio y la medicina.
Sin duda como dice la imagen hay una gran responsabilidad por parte de los maestros en consolidar la educación y la instrucción. ¿Qué quiero decir con esto? Pues que si los maestros no hubiera ninguna otra profesión. Pero como mismo maestro puede formar para bien a un alumno también lo puede deformar.
Y eso lo aprendido en carne propia durante este primer año como profesor de historia en la escuela de arte.
Me he encontrado con alumnos que tienen muy mala base académica y con algunas deficiencias en la educación formal. Sin embargo me he tomado el trabajo de detectar estas deficiencias y llevar un trabajo de educar e instruirlos, no solo para que aprueben el año si no que, lo que aprendan, les sirva para la vida.
Para eso siempre he tratado de hacerlo con mi ejemplo. No puedo pedirles que hagan algo que yo no haría o no sería capaz de hacer. Por eso, si despido que estudien, no solo su carrera sino que se instruyan en todos los aspectos del arte y de la vida en que puedan hacerlo para que continúen estudiando en aras de inscribirse en la universidad, yo también tengo que hacerlo.
Así que ante la primera oportunidad me matriculé en la carrera de Español-Literatura.
Cualquiera pensaría que, al ser profesor de historia (asignatura que he descubierto que me encanta), esa sería la carrera a matricular. Sin embargo, no.
Y la razón es que los demás amo en el mundo es escribir y quien dice escribir también dice leer.
Si me ha encantado impartir las clases de historias es porque lo puedo mezclar y vincular con la literatura y el arte en general.
El arte siempre ha estado intrínsecamente relacionado con los movimientos históricos. Por eso me ha resultado tan fácil y al mismo tiempo hermoso estudiar e impartir la asignatura de historia de Cuba. Además es que he aprendido muchísimo de Mi historia y mi cultura.
Entonces imagínense lo que podría impartir, las clases que podría preparar si le pongo este mismo ímpetu a la asignatura de español-literatura. Mi idea es ayudar a los alumnos a que amen su idioma, a que lean, a que conozcan de los principales autores universales y cubanos; a propiciar el fomento y el hábito por la lectura.
Hábito tan necesario y tan desaparecido en los últimos años.
Pero el principal beneficiado al matricular en esta hermosa universidad que han podido ver a través de estas fotografías, soy yo, sin duda alguna.
Ahora es que en realidad voy a aprender a impartir una clase. Hasta el momento lo he hecho bien, según me han dicho mis supervisores y el aprendizaje de mis alumnos se ve reflejado en las notas de los exámenes y en su participación en clases.
Mientras estudio continuaré trabajando en la escuela de arte y seguiré impartiendo Historia de Cuba. No obstante, mientras el curso avance, iré aprendiendo más y dando mejores clases.
Algo bueno y que también me alegra de mi experiencia en el magisterio, es que he podido aportar mi grano de arena en el crecimiento de mis alumnos tanto como profesional de la música como seres humanos.
Sus acciones hablan por sí solas.
Estoy muy orgulloso de ellos. Y, claro, también me enorgullezco de haber dado este importante paso para mi superación.
Creo que, si llego a ser mejor maestro, mis alumnos serán mejores personas.
