Hello needle workers!
Every now and then, I like to surprise my loved ones especially my little niece with something special. This time, I decided to make a cute top and shorts for my niece using an old fabric I found tucked away in my collection.
The fabric was one I had saved from a previous dress I had made for someone, but I hadn't decided what to do with it until inspiration struck. With a little time and creativity, I turned it into a practical and stylish outfit that my niece absolutely loved!
So first I took the fabric out, tape ready and my scissors and chalk for marking.
Then went ahead to cut the top and short pattern. I carefully measured and cut the fabric to fit my niece’s size.
I wanted to make a sleeveless top, for her so to make it more stylish I decided that I'll use a rope to connect the back and front so it will be tied by the sides
So I hopped on my sewing machine, hemmed the up side of the dress and the sides of the armhole
After hemming them this is what I got below:
Next I cut out the rope for the neckline and sewed it together. Then pulled it through the front and back top using my pin
After putting the ropes through, I joined the sides of the top and started to see the short.
Like the top, the short was very easy to sew. I joined the front sides to each other, same for the back, I then fixed the pocket on the front side. After sewing the back sides together, I joined it to the front side!
After all that, I cut the waistband for the short, also the two inch wide elastic and fixed it in the band.
After adding the waistband the short was ready!
So now I had my top and short ready for my niece to rock it. And here you can see in the images below:
When I presented the outfit to my niece, her excitement was unmatched. She immediately tried it on and couldn’t stop admiring herself. Ok she didn't even want to take it off lol. The pocket was her favorite part—she spent the day putting little trinkets in it and showing it off to everyone.
Her mom was equally surprised! She had no idea I was working on this and was thrilled to see how well the outfit turned out. It’s moments like these that make sewing such a fulfilling craft.
Upcycling or repurposing old fabric is one of the most rewarding aspects of sewing. Not only do you breathe new life into unused materials, but you also get to create something unique and meaningful.
I do hope you enjoyed the process 🤗
