Hello everyone, before I start I would like to say how tired I am from making this project. It took about 14 days to finish this. I spent almost 8 hours non stop crocheting everyday throughout the 14 days. One fact about this project is that if it was for just anybody I would have given up. I can’t even explain how many times I had to undo my work because I wanted it to be perfect. What I know is that all the hours, sleepless nights and even the back aches were worth it because I made it for no other person than my mother.
My mom is a teacher and very passionate about her work. Most of her students like her so much that they even come here to spend vacation sometimes. I planned on making this tote bag for her in September as her birthday gift so she could use to carry her books but upon seeing the #needleworkyourvalentine contest, I just knew it was time to make that challenging but beautiful tote bag for my mom in the month of love.
The materials I used were:
- Graph sheet
- White and deep ash yarns
- 1.60mm crochet hook
- a pair of scissors.
I’m sure you are wondering what a graph sheet is doing here. I was going to crochet heart shapes and words so I started by drawing them on the graph to guide my pattern.
So in using the graph, each box represent a stitch you make. You can draw whatever you want on the graph and use it as a guide to crochet.
I started by making squares of crochet with heart shapes in the middle. I made 23 chains as base and then half doubled crocheted the first row. On the second row where I started making the heart shape, I changed the color and made one half double crochet in the middle and then changed the colour back to continue the row. On the third row, I made 4 half double crochets on top of the one I did so I could build the heart shape. So 1, 4, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 16. After the 16, I closed the heart shape so the next was 7 and then I made 1 half double crochet with the other color and continued with another 7 half double crochets. On the next row, I now made 5 half double crochets, switched to the other color to made 4 on top of the 1 and continued with the 5. I now made 4 half double crochets, changed the colour and made 5 and then back to the heart color. I then closed the square with two rows of double crochet.
I also made the MOM design on the bag just to keep reminding my mom how grateful and happy I am that she’s my mom.
After crocheting everything I slip stitched all of them together to make the bag and then used single crochets to make the handle. In all, I made 18 squares for this bag.
The result
I wanted to give it to my mom in a special and memorable way so I sent her to the beach(her favorite place), asked her to close her eyes and by the time she opened them she was really surprised and so happy seeing the bag. She kept on smiling all the time and I’m happy I could do this for her.
This is probably my most beautiful work and I’m glad I did it for the one person I love most in the whole world.
Thank you for your time.
