I don't know if it's even selfishness — it's laziness. Even people who do respect the rules and encourage others to follow them... well, it's just so much easier to be lazy and refuse to walk the cart back.

It won't hurt anyone, so it should be ok. It's the bagger's job to come out and get them anyway, right?

I think people are good. They do like rules and social order. But — they are lazy. They do want to do what they want, so yes there is that tendency towards individuality, but mainly I think it is laziness.

And I'm not blaming them, mind you. Everyone is so overwhelmed these days that when they have personal time, they just want to relax and be lazy. In other words, I think it's a complex problem.

Yes, those are some good points and laziness probably factors into it a lot. I also think there is a bit of entitlement there or probably selfishness as you mentioned. It's just bizarre to me. It's like you can physically see the cracks forming in society.
