In ancient times Sparta existed longer as a tourist attraction to wealthy Romans than as a sovereign heavily-militarized city-state.

This is news to me, did it transition from the former to the latter or both existed simultaneously with the latter being more well known?
It was first a heavily militarized city-state ruled by a diarchy, this was the most famous iteration.
Then collapsed due to internal and external problems.
When the Romans conquered Greece, they turned the decadent city into a tourist attraction based on old legends.
I guess aspects of Greece still retain that old legend vibes, particularly the myths surrounding the Greek pantheon.
