I'm a big fan of having my own house, and when it comes to choosing a house, one of the things that's certain I'm going to have around it is a garden. I've over the years had a thing for plants and planting, and that dates back to my childhood days when I used to follow my grandparents to their farm to do various things, and in that process, I got to learn a lot of things, especially the joy that comes from planting a small, tiny seed and watching It germinates something sometimes useful or beautiful, be it colorful flowers or vegetables; it's just an aspect of life that's therapy on its own because having it around gives us not just a beautiful sight to behold, but also fresh air, greenery, and even food.
Through the years I've gained valuable experience that has made me confident that taking care of a garden won't be a problem for me at all. I've come to understand the importance of sunlight, when to water the plant, and even how much is too much. With all of my years of learning under my grandparents, my neighbors, and having my own farm, I've come to understand plants that love shade and the ones that thrive in the sun. While there are a lot of things that give one joy, I can tell you for a fact that walking into your backyard and seeing the results of your efforts and care alive and in good shape is a blessing on its own.
Even though I'm a tenant in the place where I reside presently, that doesn't stop me from having a garden of my own. This has been a part of me, to the point where a year will hardly go by without me planting a thing or two. While some beautify my surroundings, the others are meant to provide food for me and my household, and through the years I've planted varieties of plants and crops, from yams to maize, cassava, vegetables, tomatoes, chili peppers, and cocoyams. While sometimes it can be tasking to plant and nurture these plants, I'm always comforted by the beauty and potential result of the bountiful harvest I'll get.
I've come to have a lot of people see my garden and admire it, and even go on to ask if it requires too much work, and I can't help but tell them the truth that yes, a garden requires attention to tend, pluck out weeds, clear, water, trim, and the like, to name but a few, but while others might see all those processes of caring for it as stressful, I, for one, see it as an avenue that teaches me patience and the power of consistency, because results don't just come overnight; they come as a testament to your relentlessness.
So once again, my answer is yes, I'll prefer a house with a garden, and the reason for that is far-fetched: I don't just like plants; instead, I genuinely love tending to them, and given my wealth of experience in it, taking care of a garden won't be a chore that I can't handle but one I do and enjoy the process.
