Identity issues, your language gives you an identity, language helps you connect with your family especially in the village ,if you don't know your language it'll be difficult for you to connect with family. Now this is were I fall in, I really can't communicate in my native language, and I live in my state.
Language is something you learn from childhood, any language you teach your little babies they'll have till they grow old . But my parents felt English language was better. So that was how we communicated until I had to come to school in my state, (bayelsa state Nigeria ) when I got here, I was laughed at by my peers and relatives.
They would literally insult me in my native dialect and I wouldn't even know . So I was hungry to know the language, but it seemed so difficult.
Right now I have two children, and I really don't want them to end up like me, But I don't have a clue on how to go about it .
If I had the opportunity to learn any language I'd love to learn my native dialect (ijaw) and my husband's native language (uhrobo).
