Black Box Diaries (2024)

The #MeeToo movement has undoubtedly exposed the abuses that hundreds of women have systematically suffered in industries such as film and television. But such abuses are not restricted to these areas and are more frequent than we would like.

The documentary "Black Box Diaries," directed by the sexual assault victim herself, Japanese journalist Shiori Itô, narrates the investigation she carried out on her case when Japanese authorities refused to open an investigation.

Her perseverance and strength to publicly denounce her aggressor, a high-profile journalist with powerful connections, sparked a movement in Japan that helped give a voice to victims who preferred silence due to the macho culture and lax laws that had an outdated definition of sexual abuse.

Although Shiori focused on discovering and proving the truth as a journalist, it exposed her to public scorn in the nation, and even prominent women denigrated her and doubted her accusation.

In the process of her journalistic investigation, which she documented with thousands of hours of recordings and videos, her eponymous book was born, on which the documentary is based.

Although she could not bring her aggressor to criminal court, Shiori filed a civil lawsuit for damages, which she won in all instances.

The paradox is that although the aggressor had to pay her compensation for the events, he was never considered a criminal, as the prosecution dismissed the case for "lack of evidence."

Thanks to the years of struggle by journalist Shiori Itô, and with the support of part of the population, the debate in Japan about the need to change laws regarding sexual violence was opened.

This shows us once again that silence only serves to make criminals feel impunity and continue abusing until the cycle of shame-silence that stigmatized the victims is broken.
