A neighbor I got to know some years ago that her son was addicted to drugs. He'd show up first to borrow some money to pay a debt, then to beg for more money, then resorted to stealing from her to pay for his addiction. Sadly, medical intervention did not help enough and it did not end well.

Unfortunately, not all of those stories have a happy ending.
Luckily, although few, some do overcome it. That gives us hope.
