I'm delighted to participate in this week's community contest #244. Especially since it gives me the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite books: The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett.

But I want to talk about one of the characters that impressed me the most. She's not one of the main characters, but she is one of the main characters in the novel: Aliena.
Alina is the daughter of a count who fell into disgrace due to one of the main conflicts in the novel, where he was betrayed. This girl was raped and had to leave her home with her brother, whose ear was cut off.
To fulfill her father's wish to reclaim the land, Aliena sets out to knight her brother and return him to where he belongs.
So far, everything would be fine, if it weren't for the fact that the novel takes place in a British feudal era, where women had no rights. Hence my assertion that she is a woman ahead of her time.
To achieve her goal, Aliena starts a business buying and selling bales of wool. She has to endure the scams and abuse of men who wanted to take advantage of her, simply because she is a woman. Does this sound familiar?
However, she rises to the occasion, undeterred, forging alliances with one of the novel's protagonists, and becoming one of the leading merchants in the entire region.
And I liked her not only for her entrepreneurship and her courage in fighting the conventions of the time regarding work; but also for the way she dressed, her refusal to need a man to live, and her willpower to keep her promise.
Women like Aliena, who do not give in to the conventions of the times and societies, are what we need in every era. Even today, where women supposedly have the same conditions and rights as men, we know this isn't the case.
Aliena managed to make her brother a knight and lead him to reclaim his birthright.
What didn't I like about this? That in reality, the true heir should have been Aliena. But the author, writing a historical fiction novel, could fictionalize, but not that far.
Aliena couldn't be considered a countess. The place belonged solely to her brother.
However, the heroine in the eyes of the world was always Aliena.

Con mucho gusto me animo a participar en el concurso de la comunidad de esta semana #244. Sobre todo porque me da la oportunidad de hablar de uno de mis libros preferidos: Los Pilares de la Tierra, de Ken Follet.
De esta novela habló la escritora @gaviotawriter hace unos días aquí.
Pero yo quiero hablar de uno de los personajes que más me impresionaron. No es de los personajes protagónicos, pero sí de los principales de la novela: Aliena.
Alina es la hija de un conde que cayó en desgracia debido a uno de los principales conflictos de la novela y donde él fue traicionado. Esta muchacha fue violada y tuvo que abandonar su hogar junto a su hermano, a quien le cortaron una oreja.
Aliena para cumplir la voluntad de su padre de recuperar las tierras se propone convertir en caballero a su hermano y devolverlo al lugar donde pertenece.
Hasta aquí todo estaría muy bien, si no fuera por qué la novela transcurre en una época feudal británica, donde las mujeres no tenían derecho a nada. De ahí mi afirmación de que ella es una mujer adelantada a su época.
Para lograr su objetivo, Aliena comienza un negocio de compra y venta de pacas de lana. Tiene que aguantar las estafas y abusos de los hombres que se querían aprovechar de ella, solamente por su condición de mujer. ¿Les suena familiar?
Sin embargo, ella se crece a todo, no se deja amilanar, crea alianzas con uno de los protagonistas de la novela y se convierte en una de las principales mercaderes de toda la región.
Y no solo me gustó por su emprendimiento y su coraje para luchar contra las convenciones de la época en cuanto a el trabajo; sino también, en cuanto a la vestimenta que utilizaba, a la negativa de necesitar de un hombre para poder vivir y la fuerza de voluntad para cumplir su promesa.
Mujeres como Aliena, que no ceden ante las convenciones de las épocas y de las sociedades, son las que necesitamos en toda época. Incluso hoy en día, donde, supuestamente, las mujeres tienen las mismas condiciones y los mismos derechos que los hombres.
Sin embargo sabemos que no es así.
Aliena logró convertir a su hermano en Caballero y llevarlo a retomar su lugar por derecho de nacimiento.
¿Que no me gustó de esto? Que en realidad la verdadera heredera debió haber sido Aliena. Pero el autor, al estar haciendo una novela de ficción histórica, podía ficcionar, pero no tanto.
Aliena no podía ser considerada condesa. El lugar era solo de su hermano.
No obstante, la heroína ante los ojos del mundo, siempre fue Aliena.
