Language as an identity, Ladies of Hive contest #240

in Ladies of Hive5 days ago

Hello beautiful ladies of hive!
Happy new month of June y'all!
Wow! I'm thrilled being part of this great community, it's actually my first time writing here. When I saw the topic for the contest, I said to myself "you can't miss this"

In response to the topic:

1_ How many languages can you speak? And what language would you want to learn more than anything?

I have a colleague that's multi-lingual, speaks about 5 different Nigerian languages and 1 foreign language, and I've always admired her skill. Each language represents a culture and It's beautiful when you are able to communicate with people from other culture in their dialect, It's helps you blend in and associate with the people with ease, it gives a sense of belonging.

Personally, I can speak Ibibio - my mother tongue, and English - my lingua franca, fluently, and then Pidgin language - the oga kpatakpata of all languages in Nigeria. Lol😄

I'm from the Southern part of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom precisely. We have different languages here but Ibibio serves as a central language, every other tribe in the state speaks and understands it. English is what we use in formal settings, school, offices etc, serves as a lingua franca. In Nigeria particularly, people consider English as the Language of the educated, in as much as this is agreeable, it's imperative that we don't relinquish our indigenous languages because it represents our unique cultures and carries our identities.
I call Pidgin language the oga kpatakpata (most superior) of all Nigerian languages because 95% of Nigerians can speak and understand it, both the educated and non-educated, the haves and have nots. It should be adopted as a lingua franca in Nigeria, cause if not, why not?

I'd love to learn the German language - Deutsch. Germany is one of my dream country and learning their language would be a plus.

2_ If you could invite any five people, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be?

Dinner party sounds interesting, a time to connect, reconnect, unwind, converse over a meal, sounds more interesting when you do this with family, close friends and people you look up to. It is difficult choosing only five people though, even if I want it to be family only, I'm from a family of nine...🤷 But I will choose regardless.

The first person I will invite will be my mother, she's my greatest support system apart from God and she has been ill for some time now and it breaks my heart to see her like that. We are not together currently so spending time, sharing a meal with her and making her smile would be awesome.

The second person will be Mrs Beulah, CEO of Beulah scents. She's in the same business line as me, my senior and inspiration in the business, I'd like to learn the ropes, pros and cons of the business from her.

Thirdly, I will invite Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman, a Nigerian human rights activists. I don't come across people with as much courage and love for humanity as his often. I'd like to tell him "thank you" for the good works you do and also ask him where he orders audacity from. Likeeee...!
Then I'll invite my two closest friends Mercy and Unwana, my gist partners, what is dinner without a hot gist?. With this five people on the table, I'm sure having an awesome dinner.

It was so much fun writing this, see you soon.
