Over the years, when I talk about Mother's Day in my household, what comes to my mind is a post on social media, a few minutes on the phone with my mum, and that's it.
But this year I decided to do something different. I knew my mum didn't have certain things, so I lumbered my way into a grocery store and got my mum a couple of gifts.
You know those customised cards that they sell, where they write a bunch of nice words and you can attach a person's name. Yeah, I got myself that, and I was super excited because this was the first time I had put so much effort into gifting someone. Silently hoping and praying my mum liked the gifts and the card, because she is all about saving your money.
On getting home, I hid the gift in plain sight. When my mum got home, she didn't see it immediately. I coaxed her into looking at the place where it was, and she finally saw it.
She was surprised because, yeah, she wasn't expecting a gift, but her words later pricked me.

She said, Best, why did you waste your money on all these things, when you should've used it to buy palm oil and foodstuffs for the house. I then said, Mummy, it's my money, I can do whatever I want to do with it. She responded with, You've wasted money.
Honestly, I felt hurt and started sulking. That's when I noticed the Mother's Day card never followed me home.
I must have left it at the store, which ruined my mood even more.

Well, at the end of the day, my mum came and said Thank you. I don't know if I want to go through that emotional rollercoaster again, but I know her birthday is coming soon, and I'll get her that Palm Oil :-).
