When I first heard of let it shine, it was the movie. I was in Junior High School and my friends never stopped talking about how cool the movie was. Not wanting to feel left out, I downloaded and watched it too. And then I got mad at my friends for letting me miss out on the movie because of the songs in it.
My friends used to argue in class over the best song in the movie but after I watched it and listened to the let it shine song, I was surprised that argument existed in the first place. Let it shine is a song by Coco Jones and Tyler James Williams. I found it hard to hear the lyrics because it had rap in it so I begged my Junior one afternoon to help me learn that song.
He wrote the lyrics out on a piece of paper and came to my class to teach me but along the line, the class was too noisy so we went out to the veranda. The sun was out and already facing that direction but my determination to learn it kept me under that scorching sun till he finished teaching me. And for the rest of the week, that paper was my best friend till I memorized every word.
Eventually, I proved to my friends that I could also sing at least a song in the movie. But after I got into senior high school, I realized the impact the song had on me was huge. It helped me build confidence and also became a reminder to me that with hardwork and determination, I could always let my light shine no matter how little it was.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
My favourite part of the song is the first line of the first verse which says it’s been a long road but we’re finally here. As at that time in Junior high school, I didn’t even understand but now that I’m an adult, when I feel like I hit the rock bottom and just want to give up, that line reminds me of how far I’ve come. I unconsciously find myself murmuring that line and it’s always enough to bring back memories of the things I’ve conquered.
When I was a kid, anytime I sang let it shine around my brothers, they made us share the parts. One would rap, the other would dance and I would sing(Just like how it was in the movie). You’re probably wondering how they got to even know about it. Well, after I couldn’t keep mute about let it shine, they had no choice than to watch the movie and before I realized they could also sing it.
So many years have passed and I still remember every word in that song. I’m glad I memorized it because those powerful words in that song have been helping me for ages.
