Seeing movies that are overly hyped is one of my least favourite things to do. In fact, if given the option, I would rather wait it out for months or even a year before seeing such a movie. By this time, all of the hype must have died down and genuine reviews must have emerged. Because let's face it the movies produced these days are something else and I mean this in a bad way. It's gotten so bad that a young man in his mid to late twenties had to randomly ask me one day “what do you people watch these days” and as someone who likes to watch films, I didn't have a proper response to that question.
However, today, I'd be sharing a gem amidst the rubble. A movie that I saw a while back but can recall almost every single thing about the movie. A movie I can wholeheartedly give the “yes it was worth the hype” response to and I believe many people who have seen this movie would have the same response. **Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story”.
About The Movie
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story is one very captivating prequel that talks about the rise of Queen Charlotte–”a lady of colour”– to the throne, her romance with King George and the societal shift that follows.
The series premiered on Netflix on May 4th, 2023 and was directed by Shonda Rhimes . The series featured veteran actors like India Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest, Adjoa Andoh, Bben Wiggins and Sash Dalby.
My Opinion
This series was nothing short of amazing and I'm not mincing words when I say this, as the series offered a fresh perspective. The storyline was nothing like I had ever seen before, the characters were at their finest and the attempt at replicating the 18th century, the period during the reign of King George III of England, was impressive. The costumes used, the settings and cultural references were all in line.
One of the standout aspects of this series is its portrayal of strong, complex female characters. Queen Charlotte who initially had no interest in marrying the king soon became a force to be reckoned with; intelligent, inquisitive and determined. Another noteworthy female character was Lady Agatha Danbury, a sharp-tongued yet loyal lady of society, who steadily tried to debunk the stereotypes that surrounded women at the time.
The series explored the themes of power and the consequences that come with it, sacrifice, love, duty, identity and self-discovery. If I remember vividly, there was a point where I felt that Queen Charlotte was rebellious no doubt but not rebellious enough. Eventually, things all fell in line after she decided to stop being recalcitrant and actually settle down. The themes portrayed in this series are one of the reasons why I would want everyone to at least experience this film once in their lifetime. There were just so many lessons to learn and so many skills to grab.
The main characters were exceptional and the supporting characters were equally marvelous. Viewers were given proper backstories making these characters seem intriguing. This way, we were able to decipher their complex personalities, determine their motivations and also understand their relationships.
Need I mention the British accent used in the movie. If anyone asks, I'd always say that the British accent is just so nice to listen to, especially in movies. Now, the amazing part is that this series features a good number of non-British characters but if one isn't told, they wouldn't differentiate it because all the characters brought their A-games to the accent table.
The follow up series; Bridgeton, was equally breathtakingly fantastic, although there were some visible mistakes along the line. I particularly liked how Queen Charlotte ended, leaving viewers feeling utterly satisfied and yearning for a taste of something similarly amazing.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story” was one very interesting watch for me, one I would give a 9.5/10 rating to. This series excelled in many aspects without a doubt and I hope if other Bridgeton stories are released in the near future, they are up to par with this series.
