The movie The Gorge has been the trailer I've come across a lot lately and I've watched it every time. As such, it was inevitable to watch the movie, and I have to admit that the scenes shown in the trailers were quite intriguing and triggered my curiosity enough.
Levi and Drasa are two sniper characters in the world we know, but serving an unknown purpose. Before getting into the story of the movie, I would like to say that I really liked the script and the way the story was handled in the beginning.
There is a huge chasm separating the characters who are tasked with protecting a deep gorge in a mysterious country called The Gorge. Cut off from the rest of the world and forced to live an isolated life, the two form a bond despite the distance between them, and this bond triggers the beginning of the disclosure of the secrets of the gorge.
Miles Teller as Levi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa are a dazzling and enviable duo with their performances both in their situation and in the moments when the mysteries of the gateway are revealed. The actors' efforts to flirt as much as the distance between them allows will be memorable as funny scenes in the sci-fi genre production.
At least the chess game scenes where they play from so far away will be for me. Lol
Until the moment when the secrets of the passage are revealed, the movie successfully creates an element of fear through the unknown of the passage. The momentum of fear and mystery continues to build until the source of the creatures emerging from a deep pit covered in mists is revealed...
...but from the moment the secrets are revealed, the momentum of the movie drops. Moreover, although the action scenes start at the moments when the momentum drops, I can't say that they make a big impact. If I were to evaluate the movie from this point of view, I can easily say that a great script and a story that could have been a great start were wasted.
Still, I can't say the movie is bad or mediocre. The secrets of the gate and the flirting scenes between the two make the movie watchable for a while, and then the love between the two reaches a level where they can sacrifice each other. In fact, it would be appropriate to say that the ending of the movie can be considered as the happy ending of a love movie.
I think the movie and the story would have been much more successful if the secrets of the gateway had been connected to supernatural forces or to an unexplored aspect of the world instead of earthly reasons that would be linked to World War II. After the moment when the secrets were revealed, I was disappointed.
After the disappointing moments, I was curious to see where the bond between the characters of Levi and Drasa would lead. I can say that the warmth and harmony between the two of them outweighs the story, including the action scenes of the movie. The ending was as beautiful as it could be in a love movie.
Overall, the movie has a structure that blends action, thriller and sci-fi genres. There is a strong chemistry between the characters and it reflects this successfully. The individual performance and harmony of the duo makes the movie gripping.
I can only say that I didn't like some of the progression after the revelation of the secrets, but this may be due to my expectations. Because my expectation was that the creatures trying to get out of the deep passage were the original owners of the world or some unknown species with extraterrestrial powers.
As a result, I recommend you to watch the movie without great expectations, especially for the duo of Levi and Drasa. There are character-driven scenes that will warm the hearts of the viewers and make them smile happily.
