I think in every movie star’s career, there’s got to be that one film. That one film that is so terrible, it may almost make people forget that you were ever featured or starred in a good film. Saw some movie recommendations from Netflix, and was like, “A Jolie film I’d never watched?” So, I decided to see this film with the hopes and understanding that some stars just don’t have horrible movies, or so.
Life or Something Like It (2002)
Lanie Kerrigan is a successful reporter living in Seattle and working for a Seattle television station. To the outsider, Lanie is living the perfect life, and Lanie herself believes that with her successful job, which keeps growing in leaps and bounds, a successful baseball player fiancé, a forever-fit body because of her strict diet and gym routine, and friends she cares about, she is truly living the perfect life.
That is, until she interviews an infamous prophet to get the predictions of an upcoming game. Only this self-proclaimed prophet, in addition to the score predictions, tells Lanie that she is going to die next Thursday. With the news that she is about to die, Lanie, who had the single-minded drive for success, must now rediscover herself to know what true happiness is.
Honestly, maybe it’s the date this was acted, or maybe it was heavy on the fact that it’s a feel-good movie, but you could smell how the story would go a mile away. And yeah, for people who have seen Jolie in more serious roles like Salt, you may not exactly find this movie appealing, or maybe think that Jolie was at her best. I, personally, thought she was alright. The blonde hair was something, not sure whether it’s a good something, but something nonetheless, and her appeal is ever-present and pouring out in waves. So, good for her, really.
My issue with the movie was the picture that you can’t be a successful woman, or rather a driven and ambitious woman, who just liked to work hard and be the best at what she was doing, meant she did not have a true life’s purpose. There was the stench of appeal in being directionless hanging in the air, courtesy of the male lead, and I wonder why that was the case.
I also expected her to be mean, so that there would probably be a reason for genuine character development, but that wasn’t the case. She was a good friend, a good daughter, generally a nice lady, but her ambition was just an issue, I guess? Anyway, thoughts? Who’s seen this Jolie’s not-so-popular film?
