I know I said I wasn’t going to talk about any low-rated films, but I need your thoughts on this film real quickly, yeah? Many of us, if not all of us, are familiar with the name Marilyn Monroe. Although this film is not some form of biography of Marilyn, and some even say that this movie is a “fictitious” interpretation of Marilyn’s life, and while we will not particularly be dissecting that subject matter, we will be talking about the film, Blonde.

Norma Jeane is about six years old when she is taken to an orphanage after her mother tries to drown her and is declared unfit to raise a child. Later on, Norma Jeane grows into a model who adopts the stage name Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn is trying hard to break into Hollywood as an actress, but is not proving entirely successful, especially when in the course of doing this, she gets raped by one of the directors who promises to give her a role.
She finally lands her breakout role with “Niagara” which takes her to stardom. She gets fame that leaves her dazed and also involved with all manner of people. She eventually gets married to Joe, but the marriage suffers a fallout when Marilyn’s previous lovers leak some nude publicity photos to her husband. From there, coupled with the incessant mental breakdowns she has, Marilyn’s life begins to spiral downwards at an alarming rate.
I don’t know a lot about Marilyn, and apart from a particular narrative which I believe most of us are aware of, I felt like this was a chance to learn something other than what she was stereotyped to be, but was that really the case? This film had as low as a 2.5 rating on IMDB, and I think I could understand why. I think we needed to see Marilyn painted in a light that is different from her being a perpetual sex object.
I believe she was so much more than that box she has been stuffed in, even after death. She was smart, an entrepreneur, and pushing the dumb blonde narrative felt like more of an injustice to me. That being said, there were far too many sex scenes. Again, pushing the sex pot narrative. This film didn’t need that, and I sure believe that the viewers did not need that as well.
But other than that, the film was actually beautiful in terms of the acting. The cast all interpreted their roles with such finesse, and I was particularly pleased with the acting of Ana de Armas, who played the role of Marilyn. The movie did win the worst picture and worst screenplay in the Golden Raspberry Awards. Even though this movie was more or less brushed under the carpet, I’m sure a few of us have seen it, so what are your thoughts? Did you enjoy the movie or?
