A lot of people mistake greed for ambition, unknown to them, while some use it as justification to suit themselves in their quest or desire for selfish reasons. Before I delve into the question proper, I would like to state the meaning of both terms - Greed and Ambition for proper understanding.
Greed
According to the Oxford dictionary - greed is an intense or excessive and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power or food.
Ambition
Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something, the desire for personal advancement.
How do you differentiate between greed and ambition?
Considering the above definition of both terms I think it is safe to say that while greed does not have limit to its desire, ambition does. Greed wants to have more of the limited available resources regardless of other people's feelings while ambition is so concerned about creating more of the resources so that other people can benefit from it. Greed due to its quest to have more and more does not understand the word “enough” while ambition does. Greed takes advantage of scarce resources to satisfy its desire while ambition sees it as an avenue to create more with the intention for abundance. Greed wants more while ambition creates more.
Greed is centred with exploiting others, insatiable quest for power, status or wealth and when these are the order of the day, it will eventually lead to corruption like what is obtainable amongst politians. It is also greed that makes people to get scammed through ponzi schemes by the quest to get more. While ambition on the other hand is driven by achieving something like one who has the dream of becoming a chatered accountant. It is basically focused on proving to itself that certain feats can be achieved and such achievement is not for self gain alone but for others too.
Do you think ambition can eventually turn into greed? Why?
Just like my title read -”The thin line between greed and ambition”. Yes, ambition can eventually turn into greed, reason being that when an ambitious person refuses to understand when it is time to say it is enough it can eventually turn into greed. An ambition could also turn into greed if one looses the conciousness of recognizing some ethical principles or standards guiding a particular feat, such ambition could be said to be unhealthy and when an ambition becomes unhealthy it has eventually turned into greed.
Conclusion
Greed is insatiable, self centered, exploitative and obsessive. Ambition on the other hand understands when it is enough and centres or thinks of others not self alone. Hence, is focused on creating more for other people to benefit from. Ambition if not consciously checked could also lead to greed. One who is ambitious should be conscious of one's self to avoid turning into greed.
