I know I've banged on this drum before, but I find it absolutely infuriating how little information there is about women's sports on the Internet. In fact, if you go to the Yahoo Sports page you have to dig to actually find the "Women's Sports" section. Then, when you finally do get there, they only have information about basketball and soccer.
Sports that are gaining quite a bit of popularity like volleyball and softball are virtually nonexistent.
Instead, I had to head over to the official NCAA page to find the information I was looking for. It's pretty clear that the major sports outlets don't care about these events at all. CBS Sports, The Score, and ESPN all had very little information about Women's Volleyball. ESPN did have a section that listed scores, but other than that it was just as blank as the other sites.
As I said, I jumped over to the official NCAA page and I was actually able to get scores, rankings, and even a look at the empty bracket for the national tournament that starts on December 4th. That's right, it's just a couple of weeks away!
With that in mind, let's take a look at the current rankings to see how things might look going into the tournament.
Lo and behold, Nebraska is sitting in the number 1 spot with a 26-0 record. That's pretty impressive. If you have ever been to a volleyball match, you know that sometimes teams can have an off night. Usually they might lose a game or two, but they can claw their way back. That isn't always the case.
The fact that Nebraska has failed to lose a single match so far this year is insane. Hats off to the Corn Huskers!
Moving on, we have Kentucky, Texas, Pittsburgh, Stanford, Texas A&M, Louisville, SMU, Arizona State, and Wisconsin rounding out the top ten. I honestly expected there to be more Big Ten schools in the mix at the top, but I guess I haven't been keeping up with it as much as I thought.
I think Wisconsin just edged their way back into the top ten after a win the other night.
Moving on, we have Purdue, Creighton, Kansas, Miami, North Carolina, Southern California, Indiana, Tennessee, Minnesota, and TCU in the 11 to 20 slots. Finally, the top 25 is rounded out with Colorado, Iowa State, Baylor, Penn State, and BYU. It's nice to see a bit more representation from the Big 10 in the higher rankings. I'd still love to see Michigan State up in there, but I don't think they have that great of a team this year.
In fact, I'm not sure they are really considered a volleyball school to begin with.
Pitt on the other hand is a staple and has a long standing tradition of being a volleyball school. It's not surprising to see them in the top 5.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out as we move into the conference tournaments and then the national tournament. It's going to be a lot of fun, that's for sure!
