Powering My Homestead Safely ⚡️: The Gear Switch and Circuit Breaker Solution 🔌💡

in Homesteadinglast month

Have you ever faced a significant electrical issue in your home that made you rethink your power setup? ⚡️

I've been in that situation for quite some time, and I've been looking for a long-lasting, cost-effective solution. 💡

It took me a while to make my final decision, especially since the power supply in my area is unstable. I needed a reliable setup to maximize the available power. 🔌

After troubleshooting, I decided to replace the common knife-edge changeover switch with a gear switch changeover. I also added a circuit breaker for extra safety. 🛡️

While the knife-edge changeover switch is functional, it does have its defects. Regular and inconsistent performance is common with knife-edge switches, and since they are made of plastic and iron, they are prone to melting and rusting. 🔥

When the iron begins to rust, the power supply from that point to every other point in the house becomes inconsistent, leading to a drop in current. This fluctuation can be harmful to the electrical system in the house. ⚠️

Now, why did I choose a gear switch changeover? 🤔

The gear switch changeover is designed to divide the load into multiple points, whereas the knife-edge changeover is limited to just one output point.

Additionally, the gear switch changeover is constructed from better materials; for example, the rotary mechanism is made of ceramics instead of plastic, and the metal components are made of copper rather than iron or aluminum, as found in the knife-edge switch. 🛠️

Ceramics do not melt under high heat, and copper is a better conductor compared to aluminum due to its lower thermal resistance.

The final addition was the circuit breaker, which ensures that any incoming supply from the main power source is properly screened before entering the changeover. If there is an issue with the supply, the circuit breaker will disconnect the system, protecting the home from potential damage. 🔒

Since implementing these changes, everything has been running smoothly without any issues. 🌟

What are your thoughts on my solution? Is there anything else you feel I should consider adding to the setup? 🤷‍♂️
