Hello everyone, welcome to another edition of the Sci-fi prompt, it's a wonderful topic presented to us for this week , sure I do have something to talk about on this so we dive in without further ado. So when people talk about culture, yeah, they usually start with “it is the people’s way of life.” but to me, culture is more than that regular definition it is not just the food or clothes or festivals , It is how we act, how we talk, how we relate with others, and even how we carry ourselves, it is what shapes us into who we are, whether we know it or not.
See ,I am from Akwa Ibom State, and if there is one thing our culture does not joke with, it is food, Like, we take food very seriously here o,you can not just talk about Akwa Ibom and not mention Afang soup, Atama, Editan or Ekpang Nkukwo , the taste of our food alone is culture talking through the tongue, lol ,even the way we prepare our meals using firewood and all that local touch is part of what makes it so special.
Our greetings are also a big part of our culture, When you are greeting an elder, you better do it well with respect, In fact, if you forget to greet someone older than you properly, do not be shocked when you hear, “you don’t have home training.” That’s how serious we take respect.
But outside my own tribe, I really admire the Yoruba culture a lot ,I love how they kneel or prostrate to greet their elders, it just shows a level of humility and respect that’s really beautiful to see, and have you seen their traditional weddings? All the aso ebi, the colors, the gele , it is giving full culture vibes, no lies.
There are also some cultures I see online that just amaze me, like the Japanese one where they remove their shoes before entering a house, I think it is a cool habit and it shows how clean and organized they are , And the Indian saree! That dress is too fine, I honestly wouldn’t mind wearing one for a photoshoot someday sha.
Now, the funny thing is, some of us just do not even realize how much of our daily habits are so rooted in culture, the way we kneel slightly to greet or the kind of names we bear, then folktales our parents used to tell us, those kind of traditional dances during festive seasons, you see, all of that is culture.
For me,I believe that culture gives us identity, It is what makes us different from each other, but it also brings us together in some kind of way, see we might have different ways of doing things, but then at the end of the day, it is all still beautiful.
So yeah.... , I might not just know how to recite every cultural proverb or even do all the traditional dances, but yet I am still proud of where I come from and what my culture do represents.
Culture is definitely who we are and I think that it is something worth holding on to.
