The Silent Stealers

My mom is a nurse. Growing up, she often told us stories about things that happened in the hospital. Sometimes, she would tell us the ones with happy endings; how one of her patients survived a ghastly accident or how they beat a terrible infection. I remember when she told me about a diabetic patient who almost lost her legs due to diabetic foot. The doctors told her that they would have to cut her legs, but luckily, her legs healed and they didn't have to amputate her legs. On other days, she told us sad ending stories. Sad stories that would make you wish to have the power to cure diseases. Whenever my mom tells us stories about her patients who have incurable diseases, the one question I always ask is: But what really caused it? What did they do to deserve this?

My mom returned from work a few weeks ago with teary and red eyes. It was obvious that she had been crying. What would make her cry so hard that her eyes became really red? I asked her and when she finally told me, I was moved to tears. A lady in her early 30s was diagnosed with leukemia. She had been bleeding from different parts of the body and when they finally ran some tests, they found out that she has leukemia.

My mom had a conversation with the lady’s mom and she told my mom that the daughter who is battling with leukemia is the bedrock of the family. Ever since their dad died, she has been the one taking care of her mother and younger siblings. She bought a car for herself and her mom, built a house for them, and equipped it with the necessary things. She also has a company. According to her mom, she takes church seriously, particularly tithing. She always made sure she paid 10% of her monthly earnings to the church. Do you know how difficult it can be to give 10% of your earnings to the church every month? This lady did it religiously and faithfully.

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. My mom told me that ever since she started working in that hospital, none of the leukemia patients they had admitted survived it. The last one received 40 pints of blood, which cost a lot of money. But when they started chemotherapy for her, her body could not take it and she died.

This particular lady had two options; to go for chemo or find other methods. The doctors told her that Chemo would be the best option for her, but when they started it, it almost drained her completely. They moved her to another hospital for dialysis. I don’t know what that means. The lady’s mom made sure to keep my mom updated every step, but after some time, she stopped reaching out, picking up calls and even replying to messages. My mom fears that the worst might have happened.

If I had the power to create a cure for a disease, it would definitely be cancer. It saddens me when I see cancer patients, especially when their hair starts to fall off. I hope that God keeps us safe because really, it is not that we are better than them, it just takes the grace of God.

Leukaemia is a terrible type of cancer; the doctors will always give you words of encouragement. recently we lost my friend's mom to leukemia, it was just like a dream, at first she was been treated for infection but she was then advised by her children to go to a different hospital for another opinion, that was when she found out it was cancer, and she was still not diagnosed the right type of cancer until it had gone to her lungs. It was a tragedy for the family, which they are still trying to recover from.

It's very very alarming how the dearly feared HIV/AIDS back in the days is now a learner to what cancer can do. God abeg oooh!

Poor medical checkup have made alot think they are healthy

The lives cancer have claimed can not really be counted, it is currently more feared than even hiv/aids.

Cancer is a deadly illness, I have seen cancer patients and it's really heartbreaking seeing the pains they go through and you can't really do anything to help them other than pray and hope they get well soon. It's really sad 😢

Wow, it's incredible all this can happen. It's nice that they can free us, but we still remain worried for a while. I know we would like to make a cure, but why don't you do it? You never know from what source someone can come up with the cure.

!HUESO

The way there are different kinds of cancer these days is alarming, I will be wondering what that was again. Living healthy is now a necessity

Cancer truly steals lives silently and painfully. Reading this just shows how fragile life is. I pray for strength for families going through this and hope one day a lasting cure will be found.

Cancer is a serious sickness that needs attention, if there can be vaccine for it.

Leukemia is a very terrible one. I remember watching a well known sports personality talk of how he was diagnosed with it. He had to take time off for treatment. Fortunate for him it was detected early I guess and he got to fight it. Many suffer from different kinds or cancer and it's a pain to them and their loved ones.

Ohh dear this is so sad. This right here is one of the reasons why I’ll never be a health practitioner.

This was such a beautiful read, well done.

Many families hv suffered loss of all kinds due to cancer. I am really craving to see this disease get a cure and give humans peace
