Heaven knows I've been looking forward to a day when I'd rant about the power supply in my area. In my previous posts, I've occasionally touched on the situation of the power supply in my area, but looking back, I don't think I've ever written a post specifically about this topic. To facilitate effective and efficient learning, it is expected that students live in a comfortable environment. How can we expect them to be comfortable when everywhere is dark and they have to run helter-skelter to sort themselves out? For Day 8, the INLEO community is asking us to discuss the power supply in our areas and how it can be improved.
During my high school days, I often envisioned my university lifestyle. I'd often imagine myself living a comfortable lifestyle. One thing I had at the back of my mind was to have fun and take school seriously. The movies I watched also contributed to this- I thought university life was fun until I got in. The life I have been living is nothing compared to the one I envisioned, and one thing that keeps making it worse is the power supply in my area. Before I got admission into this school, I did not think about the economy of the school, nor did I think about the power supply. I should have asked myself these questions; how standard is the school? How comfortable is the environment? How good is the power supply?
All I knew was that someone told me about the school and I got interested in it without considering the consequences. So, I took the necessary exams, picked the school as my first choice, and viola! I got in. It was after I got in I realized I’d gotten caught in a trap; a trap I set by myself. There are so many negative things about this place. Merely thinking about them could give you a headache. From lack of classrooms to expensive goods and services; goods and services increase in price almost every day, and then, the power supply. Four years ago, when I newly got to this school, the power supply was nothing to write about, but it was still manageable. Now, this is my definition of manageable; they only give us electricity two or three times a month, and it is always the end of the month when the electricity company comes to collect their bills. Giving us electricity twice or three times a month is still better than nothing, right?
After a year, I moved to another area closer to school. The situation of the power supply in that place was worse than in my former area. I stayed there for a year, and we never had electricity, not even once. The most concerning part about this whole thing is that despite the lack of electricity in certain areas, landlords still keep building hostels and putting them out for rent at ridiculously expensive prices. I moved out of my hostel to another area where we had electricity, although it wasn't steady. For the first 3 months, we had electricity at least 3 times a week. It was really nice because I got to charge my devices and read overnight when it lasted till the next day. All of a sudden, we stopped enjoying it. It has been more than one year and 9 months since we last had electricity in this area.
HOW DO STUDENTS SURVIVE IN THIS AREA
Well, it's all thanks to charging centers and generators. In my hostel, more than a quarter of the rooms have generators, and most of the owners are generous enough to allow people to charge their devices. While this is good, it also causes noise pollution. Some people find it difficult to sleep when the sound of generators from all directions is disturbing them, but I've gotten used to it. Charging centers have also been helpful. All you need to do is take your devices there and charge for a fee.
Can the situation of the power supply in my area be fixed? I honestly do not have an answer to this question, but the thing I know is that it is not happening anytime soon.
Thanks for reading.
