flooding was something i have always seen on the news or social media. I never thought it would happen to me — until it did.
It happened some time last year. The rain started like a normal evening rain. my mum and I were in the kitchen, i was helping her make dinner, when the sky suddenly went dark. The sound of the thunder was so loud, it shook the windows. Within an hour, the whole street was flooded. Water started entering our house. First it was just the floor, then it reached the chairs. That was when panic started.
We didn’t see it coming. Nobody told us our area could flood. We always believed the drainage was enough. But that night, everything failed. People ran out of their homes, some carrying babies, some shouting. We had to climb upstairs to a neighbour’s flat because our own place was not safe anymore. I couldn’t sleep that night. I kept hearing voices crying and people calling for help.
Our chairs, electronics, books, and clothes were all destroyed. My dad said it was the worst flood he had seen in over 15 years.
From that day, I learned that floods are not just about water. Our lives, homes, and peace of mind can be destroyed by it. Since then, my family has started keeping all important documents in waterproof bags. We also packed an emergency bag with torchlight, dry food, water, and first aid.
If you ever face a flood, my advice is simple: do not wait until the last minute. Leave early if you can. Save yourself first. Also, always keep your phone charged when it rains. Listen to weather updates and avoid sleeping when it’s raining heavily at night.
Natural Disasters are something that can occur at anytime , but if you can be proactive and prepare yourself before it happens , your life can be saved. That flooding was something i never thiought i would survive , but i hope my story helps someone out there.
