To be fair, people are overwhelmed, they feel like the deck is stacked against them and they don't know what to do about it, so they latch onto politicians who promise to fix it, then when someone attacks those politicians, it feels personal because that's the person who is going to help them, so they retreat further into their candidate of choice's ideology. And eventually we end up where we are now. That's quite on purpose, I think. I don't blame anyone, I just hope to nudge in a better direction.
