From a peaceful protest to massacre

in Hive Naija8 months ago (edited)

October 2020 is a day we won't forget in the history of Nigeria, a day that young Nigerians came out in Mass to have a peaceful protest tagged #ENDSARS against police brutality, particularly a unit called SARS, Special Anti- Robbery Squad. A notorious unit of the Nigerian Police known for its long record of abuse against Nigerian citizens especially youths.
They were also known to set up illegal road blocks, conduct unwarranted checks and searches, make arrests and detain without warrant or trial, rape women, and extort young male Nigerians for driving exotic vehicles and using laptops and iPhones.
The movement was led by young Nigerians which were only demanding for good governance.

It's just very annoying, how will you start harassing someone because the person is using an iPhone, and good cars, you don't even know the kind of work the person is doing, the person's background or anything, you just conclude that for the person to be using an iPhone or driving an exotic cars he must be a fraudster.

Luckily for me, I've not been harassed by SARS before but I've a friend that fell victim, there was a day he was traveling from back to school, he had an iPhone and on getting to a police (SARS) checking point, they asked all the guys to come down from the vehicle for proper checking, they searched their bags and after that they also asked for their phones, my friend was having an iPhone with him, and without even checking what was on the phone, the officers said he must pay them some money because he's a Yahoo boy (a fraudster) because he has an iPhone and how he dressed, which of course he's nothing close to it.

When he was trying to justify, one of the SARS officer slapped him and threatened to shoot him, it wasn't a funny incident at all, at last the case was settled but he later sent them some money before they could release him.
So it's very obvious that this SARS officers just extort young people, leaving their work undone and doing what's not their duty, their duty is to fight against robbery but they are busy poke nosing in other people's business.

Back to the #ENDSARS protest, from October 8th, protesters have been going out against police brutality and in the process, some casualties were recorded, the protest was all over the country and even some people abroad followed also joined.
20th of October year 2020, a very bad day... Many Nigerians matched to the Lagos Toll gate as it was the main venue for the protest but during this time, some persons alleged to be working with the Lagos State Government were seen removing cameras and street lights at the toll gate vicinity were turned off.

Few hours later, it was reported that armed men of the Nigerian Army arrived at the scene of the protest and opened fire on peaceful and unarmed protesters, thereby resulting in a disputed number of deaths.
Up till date, those people that were killed didn't get justice, they were killed while fighting for their right even though the scene was recorded by one of the protesters, captured the process when the armed men were shooting at the peaceful protesters.
At the end of the day, every of the government's action against the peaceful protesters were denied, the SARS unit have been disbanded but that won't bring back the lost souls.
