Three effective home remedies I know

in Hive Naija7 months ago (edited)

Welcome to Africa, or Nigeria, to be precise, where we have home remedies for sickness and fever. Nigeria is blessed with diverse tribes and languages, and one of the three major tribes in Nigeria is Yoruba, which is my root and my tribe. I so much love this tribe because we literally find solutions to any sickness by making use of local herbs we can get around without going to the hospital for treatment. Before civilization, most of these herbs were used for treating even internal diseases that require surgery nowadays. There are simple home remedies that work for several illnesses, including fever, and before you know it, the person who uses them will be back to his or her feet in no time.

In my tribe, when a child is born irrespective of gender, such child is bathed with herbs and also given to drink, which contributes to the strong immune system of such a child, but due to civilization, such practice is being regarded as improper. There is one home remedy that was common back then for treating chronic coughs and is still common in some homes today.

HOME REMEDY FOR TREATING COUGH

Without the use of cough syrups or even after using cough syrup and the cough refuses to subside, this home remedy is being used as the next treatment.

INGREDIENTS

  • Bitter cola

  • Lime

  • Honey

PREPARATION

Lime juice is being extracted into a bottle, the seeds being removed, then a small quantity of undiluted honey is being mixed with the lime juice, and a few pieces of bitter cola are added, depending on the quantity of the lemon juice. This is a very effective home remedy for cough; it works perfectly.

When it comes to home remedies for fever, this goes a long way because there are many herbs being used in treating fever that are so effective if followed as prescribed. For the purpose of this write-up, I will be mentioning the ones I am used to—the ones I have used several times and that have worked for me.

INGREDIENTS

  • Mango leaves

  • Paw-paw leaves

  • Neem leaves

  • The bark of a mango tree

  • Lime

The bark of the mango tree has some distinct benefits, such as being rich in antioxidants and packed with vitamins A and C to nourish, preserve, and revitalize both the skin, body, and hair. It also helps in soothing inflammation, fighting bacteria, and eradicating fungi. Neem leaves also have their benefits, as do paw-paw leaves and mango leaves.

PREPARATION

All these ingredients are washed thoroughly, then put in a pot. The lime is being sliced into two and added, then boiled with water to 100 degrees Celsius. After which it is left to cool, then the patient will bathe with some portion of it and drink some certain quantity for three days, and then the fever will be a forgotten issue.

Another home-made remedy that I grew up with is the use of sweet basil leaves, popularly known as efirin in my tribe; some call it scent leaf. It is also used as a spice, and my mom enjoys using it in her cooking. This leaf has some distinct health benefits, such as helping with stomach aches, dysentery, diarrhea, bloating, vomiting, and also lowering blood sugar levels.

PREPARATION

The basil leaves are thoroughly washed, then boiled; in some cases, they are grinded and sieved before drinking. It is very healthy, although my mom does force me to take it because I don't like it at all. I guess we tend not to like things that are healthy because they are not sweet or tasty.

Thanks for your time, and your comments will be appreciated.

My mother nearly suffocated with me Bitterkola and ginger when I had cough. Honey and Lemon too. The cough was chronic as it seemed as though modern medicine was not working. So, we turned to traditional methods which was Bitter Kola, Lemon, Honey, Ginger and Tom Tom. Three days was all it took to clear.

That's how effective it was and still is. Thank God for our mothers

Aren't we so blessed with so much natural medicine here in Africa, I haven't had to buy cough syrup in many years thanks to our natural home medicine that work like charm.

Your post is very insightful and will be useful for anyone with stubborn cough.

Those remedies are effective
but civilization has taken them away

I think if we are wise we will strive to retain and preserve them.
I have a few that are very useful to me, I can never let the knowledge go no matter the level of civilization of found myself in.

That's just the right thing to do

I have taking a lot of lime juice for nausea though. Didn't know it can be mixed in that manner.

It can oo, very effective
