WHEN WORDS FOUND WINGS

School is a place filled with countless little moments, some quickly forgotten, some embarrassing, and some so special that they remain etched in your mind forever.

Among all my school experiences, the one that stands out the most was the day I received unexpected recognition from my teacher. It was not only a proud moment, but also one that shaped my confidence and gave me a sense of belonging that I will never forget.

It happened during my final year in secondary school. That's a long time ago.

Our English Literature teacher, Mrs. James, was known to be strict but deeply passionate about her subject. She always demanded excellence and rarely handed out compliments, so earning her praise was no small achievement.

One faithful Monday morning, she walked into the classroom holding a stack of marked essays from our recent test. The class instantly became quiet and everyone was tensed, because we all knew this was the moment of truth.

She began calling out names one after the other, announcing scores while handing back the scripts. My heart beat faster each time a paper was given out. I had put my best effort into that essay, staying up late for two nights to polish it, but doubt still clouded my mind. What if she didn’t like it? What if I had missed the main point of the question? All these questions ran through my mind while I was sorted quietly waiting for name to be called.

Then, to my surprise, Mrs. James paused in the middle of the distribution. She adjusted her glasses and looked around the room. “I have read through all the essays,” she began, “and one stood out more than the rest. This particular student managed to bring words alive in such a way that I felt transported into the story. It was not only grammatically correct but also full of imagination and sincerity.”

The class leaned forward in anticipation. Then she called my name. Ehhh…🥺

For a moment, I thought I had heard wrong. My classmates turned to me with expressions of surprise, some smiling, others whispering. Slowly, I rose from my seat, feeling a mix of nervousness and pride. My palms were sweaty as I walked to the front of the class to collect my paper. Mrs. James asked me to read it aloud so that everyone could learn from it.

I cleared my throat and began to read. At first, my voice trembled, but as I continued, I noticed my classmates paying close attention. Some nodded in approval, others looked impressed, and even the students who rarely showed interest in literature were listening.

By the time I finished, the classroom erupted in applause. I felt a rush of warmth in my chest, a sense of accomplishment I had never experienced before.

Mrs. James smiled at me and said, “This is the kind of effort I want to see from all of you. Hard work and creativity always pay off. Well done.” Those few words carried more weight than any grade or certificate. They became a source of motivation that pushed me to work harder, not just in English but in every subject.

That day remains my most memorable school experience because it taught me the value of perseverance and self-belief. Recognition from a teacher is more than just praise, it is a reminder that our efforts are seen, our voices are heard, and our potential is greater than we realize.

The class leaned forward in anticipation. Then she called my name. Ehhh…🥺

I can relate to these sort of situation whereby the teacher keeps giving praises to an unknown student, leaving everyone tense until he or she finally calls out the name everyone had been aching to hear. And it turns out to be you?? Surprise, nervous, happy....you will feel all emotions at once.

It seems like this is a general.... should I say, trait? Cause my English, also literature teacher is a very strict woman. At the same time, does justice to her subjects.

It was indeed a proud moment that keeps living rent free in my head up till this point which I think I can't forget.
It taught me perseverance and self belief and that has kept me going.

Thank you sis for popping in 🤗🤗

I can imagine just how much effect it had on you 🤭.

You're welcome

I can imagine ow amazing this must have felt😊. I like that you took this not as opportunity to look down on others but a nudge to do better and be better.

I can never forget that day, that experience alone built perseverance in me, and that has kept me going.

Thank you mamas for stopping by 🤗🤗

Getting recognised publicly in class by a teacher is a form of achievement for students because instantly, you will become the kind of student everyone wants to relate with. Automatic level elevation 😅

There's this special feeling that comes with it, I must say.
