After the Dragon Boat Festival, it really feels like summer has officially arrived. The temperature has definitely gone up quite a bit. To welcome the season, I’m sharing a few photos from when I was wandering around a downtown area in Canada during summer—just a little way to embrace the start of this sunny season. Hopefully, this also kicks off a lucky summer for me—haha.

Speaking of luck, a few days ago something happened that I’m not sure whether to call lucky or unlucky. One night, just before midnight, I realized that the bathroom in my room had mysteriously locked itself from the inside after I closed the door. The moment it locked, I kept thinking: did I accidentally twist the lock by mistake?

All I can say is—I was really lucky. Because when it happened, I was outside the bathroom. If I had been inside, I wouldn't have had my phone to call my family for help. Sure, maybe I could’ve shouted for help, but considering how well bathrooms tend to block sound, I’m pretty sure no one would’ve heard me yelling from inside...

Anyway, not being locked inside probably already counts as a lucky outcome. The only remaining issue was figuring out how to open the locked door. So I called my family over, and we scoured the internet for solutions. Most people seemed to recommend similar methods. The first was to bend a hairpin or a wire hanger into a wavy shape and slide it into the door gap—tried that and failed. Others suggested sliding in a card or a piece of a plastic bottle, like those lock-picking scenes in movies. Looks easy on screen, but in reality, without a good leverage point, there’s no way to actually turn the lock—also a fail.

We even considered the “hammer method”—basically smashing the doorknob with a hammer, which supposedly works—but since it was close to midnight, we didn’t want to wake the whole house, so we ditched that idea too.

Just when I thought the lock was a lost cause, I noticed that it seemed a little loose. So I inserted a long hairpin into the loosened area... and somehow the door just opened! Later, I locked the door again to test the method, but if the angle was off even slightly, it took forever to open again.

In the end, the whole incident wrapped up fairly well. Even though I was sweating like crazy during the whole door-breaking adventure and felt like I was running a physics experiment, I still consider myself pretty lucky. I guess a little luck goes a long way in any situation. So here's hoping the rest of this summer stays lucky too~
