Today, I want to share some beautiful views I captured while traveling around Canada by bus. Since I don’t drive, my main way of getting between destinations—aside from the occasional ride from friends—was public transit. Fortunately, buses in most cities are pretty similar, and the fares are quite affordable. So every time I took a local bus, I treated it like a sightseeing tour.

These photos were taken during an especially long bus ride. Since I had just arrived in Canada not long before, everything felt so fresh and exciting to me. When I saw the sunset outside the window, I couldn’t help but snap a ton of pictures, imagining that I was chasing the setting sun. Even though the shots were taken from a moving bus, the scenery still turned out quite nice. Maybe it’s because I was experiencing everything from a new perspective, which made me extra immersed in the moment. I bet the locals on the bus probably thought I looked a bit silly, taking pictures nonstop!

During Canada’s freezing winters, waiting for the bus can be painfully cold. But if you’re lucky enough to get a clean window, sitting inside a warm bus and watching the snowy landscape slowly pass by is a wonderful experience. It’s one of my favorite things to do during the long winter months. Sometimes, I even feel like I’m on a sightseeing bus tour every day.

That said, if it's a route I take often, I usually don’t feel the urge to take photos anymore. I guess people naturally get bored of familiar things and stop appreciating the beauty around them.

Maybe those familiar routes are just as beautiful—it’s just that we’ve grown used to them and no longer immerse ourselves in the moment. On the other hand, something unfamiliar might not even be objectively beautiful, but because we’re fully present and engaged, it feels stunning to us. In the end, whether the view outside the window is beautiful or not probably depends on whether we allow ourselves to truly immerse in it.
