Tales of the Urban Explorer: Spring Hill Tavern

in Urban Exploration5 months ago (edited)

‘Come on, it’s not that bad’, I said to @anidiotexplores who was having none of it.

Spring Hill Tavern’ was not supposed to look like this. The scaffolding was recent meaning a possible renovation, but the inside was far from restored.

@lpff had visited recently and none of this metal stability shit was to be seen. The external view was an extremely broken-down building, just how I liked it.

Mother fuckers, they could have waited until we had been!

Up till about 20 or so years ago this was the premises of G.A. Donnelly & Sons, Plumbers, Heating contractors and electrical engineers. Before this it was the Springhill tavern Public House. Another image here appears to show the pub open as the Spring Hill Tavern.

The entrance via a broken window with a landing point of a front door delicately poised over a 12-foot drop was a little challenging but no more than usual.

A little hop skip and jump and you're in, what's the problem?

...‘you can fuck off, think I'm an idiot or something?... I’ll wait here until you're done’ - @anidiotexplores...

We all have our breakpoints I suppose, and my entrance (or exit) could well have been aided by the local ambulance service.

After the jump which proved uneventful, I found myself in an old pub supposedly. Could I find evidence of what it used to be, a bar, a serving wench, some gentleman's entertainment rooms?

Could I fuck. Nothing had been renovated inside, which was a blessing but not much remained.

1_IMG_8714_1.jpg

2_IMG_8715_2.jpg

I entered a room with some graffiti, but to fully get a shot I needed to be on the far side of the room. Getting there without killing myself could be challenging.

3_IMG_8716_3.jpg

Every step was a test of nerve and my feet tentatively tested the floor before deciding this was far enough.

I was hoping some of these upper-storey rooms might house a little treasure. Some wonderful imagery can often be captured if you have the will to look.

4_IMG_8717_4.jpg

What I found were plenty of holes in the floor and doors acting as stand-ins for said gaps. I don't tend to be overly convinced with these tactics.

5_IMG_8718_5.jpg

6_IMG_8719_6.jpg

What could be on those filing cabinets I wonder? A better question is... 'how do I get to those filing cabinets?'

7_IMG_8720_7.jpg

A wooden cabinet stands alone, drawers haphazardly scattered. A strange place for such a large piece of furniture.

8_IMG_8721_8.jpg

Another room contained some old paperwork but again, could I get to it? Many holes adorned the same space and some creeping and delicate bending would be required.

9_IMG_8722_9.jpg

A list of tools did not strike me as particularly ‘pubbish’, but does tie in with the history of what I could find.

10_IMG_8723_10.jpg

The ‘Win a Colour TV’ blurb is from 1992, but the TV on offer looks like something from the previous decade. Remote control, as though this is a luxury feature.

11_IMG_8724_11.jpg

I had to stretch to take these shots or suddenly find myself falling to the lower pub section.

12_IMG_8725_12.jpg

The largest upper room held nothing of interest. No bloody way I am heading to the far reaches of that one.

13_IMG_8726_13.jpg

Nor this, if there are gold bars in those drawers I was not going to discover them.

14_IMG_8727_14.jpg

What could conceivably be down those stairs?

15_IMG_8728_15.jpg

I'm struggling to decipher my images, as this is what awaited me around the bend. The floor looks about to end with a broken ladder as a replacement, while death threatens anyone foolhardy enough to take one more step.

16_IMG_8729_16.jpg

Can you spot the bar? Me neither and climbing down there appeared to be a futile venture. All I could see was 'Hell'.

17_IMG_8730_17.jpg

It looks like an uncomfortable seat, especially if you don't remove the brick before sitting.

18_IMG_8731_18.jpg

A little evidence of a ‘grow’ which is unsurprising.

19_IMG_8732_19.jpg

Using iron beans creates stability but only dwarves are not liable to continually bang their heads.

20_IMG_8733_20.jpg

The ‘bar’ area consisted of one huge room filled with debris and crap. What a disappointment and now I would literally have to climb back up to the stone steps, in order to exit.

21_IMG_8734_21.jpg

23_IMG_8736_23.jpg

There was the matter of that door again, this was the view @anidiotexplores had. You can hardly blame him for vetoing this shit tip.

24_IMG_8737_24.jpg

I reached for the brickwork and hauled myself out. Hopefully ‘Spring Hill Tavern’ has either been renovated or flattened by now.

I've laughed a lot reading here :)) and I've been amazed to see that devastated place in its interior... I could render it and make it the setting of an apocalyptic game!... You definitely have to be a bit crazy to dive into those places!... I commend you and @anidiotexplores to the "God of urban explorers" (the Greeks or the Romans must have had one I guess) to protect you and keep you safe from injury!... And thank you so much for this delightful content to amuse and appreciate dear @slobberchops friend!...

Many of these could go well with apocalyptic games. Being there in the flesh does drag you into that scenario and it went through my mind just yesterday in another graffiti-filled mess I was in!

Yes, this one was a little more dangerous than usual. Sometimes @anidiotexplores goes places I dare not, it all depends on mood and circumstances I think 😀

That's one that needs flattening, stat!

Flattening..., why its a marvel of architecture.. whatever do you mean?!

Ah yes, silly me. It's grandiosity is unmatched!!

grot at it's finest!!

how long has that face nappy wearing sell out been on here? Time to disguise the location all my adventures!!!

how long has that face nappy wearing sell out been on here?

Don't fret, it's a placeholder account created by me so I can reference him..., he's not on here. 28DaysLater are due to start selling nappies soon, gonna buy and be hip? 😀

Fuck that!

I've seen plenty of your "Tales" in the past but I keep my original opinion that you have a great eye with your photos. Every one of these looks like they could be a scouting piece for horror films and the things you find that were left behind are just as interesting as the buildings themselves. Those dark stairs leading down are particularly eerie.

To be honest this was a shit-hole! We arrived and were dismayed at all the scaffolding. This was new, and that means blokes could be inside working on it. If so, we would have left. They tend to to take kindly to the likes of us.

I imagine this place smell pretty bad too even with all the windows smashed in.
!BEER

I can't remember it smelling bad. Some places I do like a certain school I was in yesterday.., the toilet was something to behold... I tell you!

Damn!!!
This place is badly devastated
You’re doing a nice exploration though and make sure you’re always being careful
Thanks for sharing

though and make sure you’re always being careful

One of these days, the floor is going to give way. It's already happened once, and I escaped death.

Only good thing captured are the images you manage to get with your photography, nothing here alas!

!BEER for concerted effort....

Wow, that looked sketchy as heck. I wouldn't have set foot in that one. Shit-tip on the inside! But we would never have known if you hadn't gone in !

Awesome, plus you always do such a great job with the images you select and share 👏👏👏 I've always wondered how you find so many places like this.

Thanks, I try. Finding them is getting harder.

I might have to agree with anidiotexplores there. After seeing the inside, it seemed too much risk and hassle for the 'reward'. It's good that you were able to get in and out safely, but there really wasn't much to see there. Apart from one nice graffiti, it was mostly a dump.

There was HELL in there. You have to believe what you see!
