It was somewhere from the aftermath of the September 11th attacks and the 2007 recession that gas stations here in the US transitioned to demanding everyone pre-pay. If only we knew how much worse gas prices would continue to become. It might have sparked a revolution. 250 years ago, it was tea and document stamps. Now, it might be gas and groceries.

I have vague memories of filling then paying, but even in 1994.. most places demanded you pay.. some stating $2.. then cutting off. Yes, it cost $2 to fill my motorcycle then.., joy!
