What do people do in these cases? Do they just tear it down and build new when they buy the land or do they actually try to keep it intact? Are there laws about not being able to demolish old homes?

In the case of grade listed, they are not allowed to tear them down, otherwise as far as I am aware, they can.
A pub not so far from me was demolished a few years ago, I was speccing it up for and explore then it was suddenly gone. Turns out, it was a listed building and there has been an order to rebuild it. Nothing has happened as yet!
