The challenges I faced from comparing myself and been compared to others.

in Emotions & Feelings3 months ago (edited)

Being compared to others is something I experienced from childhood.

During my high school years, I frequently felt the sting of being compared to others.

My difficulties and challenges with math made me feel that. Despite my best efforts, I never quite measured up or become very good at that subject. My mum often used the phrase, "Do those passing the same subject with oustanding scores have two heads?" to motivate me.

Although I knew she meant well, but these comparisons often took a toll on me, and most times makes me feel demoralized and isolated, especially after receiving a not very good exam results.

The pressure of comparing oneself to others can be overwhelming. It often creates a sense of urgency and pressure to meet external standards or make others proud.

This pressure can particularly be intense and draining when one's progress doesn’t seem to align with that of their peers, leading to feelings of inadequacy and doubting of one's own strength and capabilies.

Looking back, I noticed similar feelings when I joined the blockchain in May. I found myself obsessively monitoring others’ posts, upvotes, and earnings. This habit quickly turned into a source of jealousy and disappointment whenever my posts didn’t receive the same recognition. I was caught in a cycle of comparing my success to others, which only added to my frustration and affected me emotionally.

Realizing the negative effects this constant comparison had on me, made me decide to change my approach and work more on myself.

Instead of me focusing on others’ achievements, I began to concentrate on my own progress and personal goals.

This shift in mindset has made a significant difference on my life.

Even though I still face challenges and sometimes fall short of my expectations and targets, I now feel more positive about my efforts and am now more content with advancing and moving forward at my own pace and time.

While comparing oneself to others can serve as a motivator to achieving great things in life, excessive and constant comparison usually does more harm than good.

It’s very crucial and important to focus on personal growth and recognize that everyone's journey is unique and different. You need to always be aware that what works for one person may not work for another.

By setting my own targets and goals and by measuring my progress against them, I have learned to appreciate my achievements without being affected by others' success.

Recently, I’ve also found a way to use comparison to my own advantage. I now make use of it as a tool and way of self improvement, by measuring my current progress against my past self rather than comparing it with others.

This approach has fostered a healthier and more satisfying path towards me moving forward, by allowing me to celebrate my own goals and continue growing in a way that feels right and best for me.
