Sprinting clean or dirty

Phillipsen disqualified

Today was the second sprint stage in the Tour de France. Always a horrible joy to watch. It’s beautiful and scary at the same time. The best sprinters are facing each other but it can go wrong every split second…

And it almost did today. Jasper Phillipsen forced Wout Van Aert to the side of the road at 70 km per hour. Luckily Wout Van Aert is a smart guy and he stopped sprinting. But also gave up his chances for the win. Phillipsen eventually came in second, a fee centimeters behind Dylan Groenewegen.

But Jasper got disqualified for the manoeuvre, and in my opinion, very right so. It was very dangerous what he did, and it isn’t his first time. Sprints should be decided fair and square and not dirty. The sport of cycling is hard enough as it is.

Luckily nobody got hurt, but hopefully Philipsen got the message and keeps sprinting fair from now on!

Sincerely,
