The 12-Team Format Commences

in Sports Talk Social3 months ago

College Football is underway again! This year is the debut of the new 12-team playoff format. In short, the major conference champions and teams in the top 12 rankings will participate in the tournament. Remember, the Pac-12 does not functionally exist this year, so the P5 is P4 this season. Will we see a team from the G5 breaking the top? Time will tell.

The selection committee, in theory, will most likely place conference champions and their runner-ups as the top 12 teams. Biases will be apparent as the season goes on. I'm also curious to see how the committee will take tiebreakers into account. The conferences are getting too big to have all of its members play against each other at least once in a season.

The preseason AP ranking is not accurate already. The Playoff Ranking will be the metric for placement for each competing team. At the time of my writing, Florida State lost their first game against Georgia Tech.

It's weird to see Penn State facing USC since conference expansion. Not having to deal with Michigan may seem like a relief, but the schedule doesn't look like a cakewalk. It would be foolish to assume Ohio State is the Nittany Lions' only challenge this season.

BYU has a tough season as well with Utah rejoining the fray. I would be happy if the Cougars could be bowl-eligible this year. The icing on the top would be beating the Utes and the other Cougars (Houston). The only easy game on the list here is against Southern Illinois. I wouldn't underestimate Wyoming. It's going to be a scary season.

I'm looking forward to how the new system plays out. I don't feel the same upbeat excitement as my colleagues, but I will watch with interest throughout the season. In a tournament format, the most consistent team wins.

Hopefully BYU can pull off a good season, but it's a very tough schedule. Bias is always going to be a problem in the playoffs. Ever since BYU won the 1984 championship as the only undefeated team politics and bias have become much more apparent in college football. Then again there is a lot more money in college football now than there was 40 years ago!

They don't like it when someone outside the club wins with their rules.

Exactly how it works!....

I really need to start getting acquitted with American footballs actually

Do it.

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

This is news to me but it sounds awesome! So what is going to happen? Do the top ranked teams get a bye in round one? Otherwise it would be a very strange bracket.

Yes! The top 4 get a bye week.

Top 12 teams get in. Winning P5 conference championship is an auto bid. I imagine the lesser ranked team just jumps to 12 or above in that case.

Is this American football or what?
Must be fun though

It is the American one, as shown in the tags.

It's definitely going to be interesting. I have a feeling there are a lot of U of M fans that are not happy about the 9 ranking. State on the other hand is a crap shoot. Their early schedule is tough. Then the second half could be a cake walk. Depends on this new coach. I'm excited to see what Smith can do with the team. I have a feeling the twelve team format isn't going to change too much, but maybe I will be wrong.

It makes the AP poll obsolete in my opinion.

I've never really liked the AP anyway so if that becomes obsolete I think it is a win/win

Yeah, the committee at least has to be convincing.

Yeah, that is a good point. I think you are still going to see some questionable teams that squeak in. Hopefully they buck the trend and give us some upsets versus proving why they got left out to begin with.

I really don’t know much about it but where can I watch to be updated?
Feels like it will be interesting

If you don’t know much, I guess you’ll just have to start reading about American football.
