Waiting on the women

I'm actually a bit surprised by how much basketball @mrsbozz and I watched this past weekend. The Big Ten Women's tournament was taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota and we found ourselves watching many of the games.

I actually wasn't home for part of Friday night. I went out with @a4xjeeper to get some fried fish at one of the Lenten fish fries that was happening in the area. When I got home I found my wife on the couch watching one of the tournament games.

I mentioned to her that we could watch one of the shows we had DVR'd and she said no, we can watch basketball, I have been watching it all evening already anyway.

As I said, we watched the weekend unfold and saw Nebraska have a near historic run of the tournament. Unfortunately, they fell in over time to Iowa. I think the biggest shock of the tournament though was Maryland knocking out the #1 seed Ohio State fairly early in the tournament.

If the Big 10 tournament is any indication of what we have to look forward to in the NCAA tournament, I think it is going to be a good month! Jaz Shelly from Nebraska is a pretty explosive player, likewise so is Jacy Sheldon on Ohio State. Finally, Caitlin Clark is just Caitlin Clark. There isn't much else to say there.

We were flipping through a few games on Sunday while we were waiting for the Michigan State Men's game and that South Carolina/LSU game was something fierce. We actually feel like the fight at the end could have totally been avoided. The officials were playing pretty loose and letting a lot of stuff go that they should have reigned in right from the beginning. I think that is ultimately what led up to the bench clearing brawl.

It will be interesting to see how those teams do in the NCAA tournament with some of their key players sitting out the first game.

I don't know if it has always been this way, but Selection Sunday for the tournament takes place for both the men and the women on Sunday the 17th. I will be honest, I haven't been following women's basketball super closely this year (at least at the university level), but it will be interesting to see what some of the match ups are.

I have a feeling I will be watching more of the tournament than I have in the past. Similar to a lot of people in the US. The boom in women's basketball spectator-ship has steadily increased over the years and while I would argue not the most prolific player, a lot of that can be attributed to Caitlin Clark.

@mrsbozz and I were actually discussing that this past weekend and while there are some things that Clark clearly does really really well, there are other things that she simply doesn't. Her attitude isn't always the best all the time either. She has a bit of a diva mentality which could end up getting her slapped with a technical foul eventually.

All the same, I will still watch her play in the tournament. Iowa is a fun team to watch.

I've actually started to pick out more than a couple new favorites in the games I have been watching lately.

Check back tomorrow as I close out the men's regular season and we look ahead to the conference tournaments this weekend.
